SpeedFan is a freeware made by Alfredo Milani Comparetti and it is a very useful and powerful tool to help you determine any weak spots in your computer configuration. If some of your components are over-heating, it may cause damage to your computer and lower the performance of your overall-experience.
EASY-STEPS TO GET STARTED
First, make a search for SpeedFan using any search-engine, and you'll easily find the official website on which you're able to download SpeedFan for free.
Install the software, and during the first start-up the program will detect all of your temperature-sensors throughout the computer as well as sensors for the fans connected to the Motherboard. You'll get some tips on the first start of the program which can be very useful to read if you're unsure of how to handle this program.
Now, once started you'll see a list with a lot of fans listed:
Fan1
Fan2
Fan3
And so on, and after each fan you'll see the actual RPM (Rotations Per Minute) which will show you in what speed the fans are operating in. Below that list you'll see a control field connected to each fan, and this give you the opportunity to lower the RPM of the fans desired in order to make your computer run quieter.
On the right side of the main-window, you'll see the actual temperatures listed, something like:
Temp1
Temp2
GPU
CPU
HD1
HD0
In some cases the software are able to recognize the sensors for what they are, like GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), CPU (Central Processing Unit) and HD (Hard Drive), while a few others just will get labeled with Temp1 for instance. By entering the option "Configure" you can see exactly from what chip the sensor is read from, and from that option you can rename all of the temperatures to match their proper origin.
In the configure-window you can also chose which temperature you would desire for each and every sensor, and what temperature that should give you a warning if it is reached. This is a very great and useful feature that can help you a lot by giving you a great overview of what's going on with your computer.
The same can be done with the fans, simply rename them to match which components they're cooling.
SUMMARY
SpeedFan is a simple but yet so effective tool you can use to get knowledge of, and give you the ability to self-control the temperatures as well as fans rotation speed depending on if you're goal is to have a cool or a quiet computer. The choice is yours; use it to your advantage.
