Best Restaurants in Bedford in 2008

Michelle K. Miller
Bedford, Virginia is home to very few exciting things. Our town is most known for its Christmas lights at the Elks Home, and of course, The D-Day Memorial. We have a lot of churches, car lots, banks-- and of course, restaurants. Here are a few of our local restaurants that I really enjoyed this year.

1. Clam Diggers: Located on 109 South Bridge Street. The menu list isn't very extensive, but what's on there is magnificent. This seafood place has shrimp, to chowder, to a crab muffins (their own crab recipe, put on a toasted English muffin.) This restaurant serves all three chowders: Manhattan (red,) New England (white,) and Rhode Island (clear.) My favorite, of course, is the chowder. You can get a cup for $2.95 or a huge bowl for $4.50. It's a great deal, and delicious chowder. Also, this restauranrt has a fresh fish market, offering various seafood every week. I can't stop coming back for more!

2. Billy's Barbeque: Located on 1057 Hulls Street (behind Auto Zone.) I didn't expect much from this BBQ place, because just weeks before, I'd visited another new BBQ place in Bedford, called Ranch Road Barbeque, and basically, it was pretty terrible. However, I had a different experience at Billy's. This restaurant smokes everything right out back. From pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, to ribs, to London broil, they have it all. I had the BBQ sandwich (a monster of a sandwich for a little over $4,) and I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. Their sandwiches paired with one of their several homemade sauces, was on point (I love the Carolina sauce.) I must say, I told several people already, that the BBQ at Billy's was so good, I think it'd make any straight-thinking vegetarian go carnivorous.

3. Olde Liberty Station: Located on 1515 Bedford Avenue. The restaurant itself is actually an old passenger train station. The interior is indicative of that, as there's still a board up which would show train schedules, and a few large windows look out onto train tracks. The menu at this restaurant varies, from cheeseburgers, to steak and seafood, with a myriad of sides to choose from. You can also order their bread, which is to die for, served in white, wheat, and pumpernickel, with a specialty butter (my favorite is their cinnamon butter.) The food here is to die for.

That concludes my list of favorite restaurants in Bedford, Virginia, in 2008. If you're ever in town, look me up, and I'll show you around!

I forgot all about The Bedford Restaurant and Peaks of Otter. However, this is the best in 2008... so maybe new places? Which technically, I shouldn't have added in Olde Liberty Station. I guess I did that because I haven't eaten there often, but did this year. Also, I haven't eaten at any of those other places, I am embarrassed to say. Thanks for the comment! Hope all is well, James!

Dear, I do believe that you have only touched on the many great resturants in Bedford. The Station is great ,but there are many many more ie: The White House in Moneta, Betty Goodes, The Bedford Resturant, Mama's, Carol's Place, Vinnies Lori's, The Forks, Peaks of Otter, Bedford Social Club and the list goes on. Come on back some time, stay awhile, long enough to discover our town. We do have loads of fun here.
