The Cable Car Cinema & Cafe is one of the best independent movie theaters in Rhode Island for independent film enthusiasts and students just looking for a fun night out in Providence. Located not far from the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University, the place attracts both a young hip crowd and passionate independent cinema fans of all ages from Providence and surrounding towns in Rhode Island.
One of the best parts of "the Cable Car" is that it is so comfortable. It has always been special for filling the majority of its single screen theater with couches, but it's gotten even better in the last couple of years because they replaced the old couches with really comfortable black leather couches, complete with the typical movie theater convenience of the armchair cup holder. Cinema lovers can snuggle up to their dates without having an armrest digging into their side, and the couches are spacious enough that it isn't awkward if you're just there with a friend. For those who prefer their own space, single seats are also available.
The only bad seat in the place is the one behind a person taller than you, because it doesn't increase much in elevation as many more mainstream movie theaters do. But assuming no one taller than you is blocking your view, you're good to go. The single screen is small enough that you'll have no problems hearing or seeing your films.
The Cable Car keeps its website up-to-date with trailers of upcoming movies, so all you have to do is watch the trailers, decide which you want to go see, and mark it on your calendar. Get to the movie early and you might catch some music or enjoy a coffee it its attached cafe.
It's a great place offering great independent film selections in a truly comfortable movie theater. Independent movie theaters don't get much better than that.
