Best Saturday Night Live Sketches of 2008

SNL Goes Political

Michelle K. Miller
I, myself, usually don't watch Saturday Night Live very often. I used to, when my favorities were regulars on there-- Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and David Spade. However, I became quite drawn to Saturday Night Live this year, when the political race heated up, and Tina Fey returned to, in an epic role, play Sarah Palin, and other actors portrayed Obama, Biden, and Hillary. Here are what I think are the top SNL skits of 2008, consequently all political.

1. Hillary and Palin: The first political SNL video I saw was Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, and Amy Poehler as Hillary Rodham Clinton, unitedly taking on the issue of sexism in politics. Tina Fey, as Palin, portrayed Republican eye candy, who requests to stop being called a M.I.LF. And Amy Pohler, as Hillary Clinton, portrayed the idea that the former first lady was abrasive, and a bit of a hag. The highlight of this sketch is when "Palin" was going on and on about how she was just a heartbeat away from Presidency, which proves anyone could be President, and "Hillary" loses it, because she fought long and hard, to become the Democratic nomineem, and how she didn't want a woman as President, but just her. The whole skit was a hilarious interaction.

2. Biden vs. Palin: SNL's re-enaction of the Vice Presidential Debate was just about priceless. With Queen Latifah as the Obama-biased debate moderator, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, and Jason Sudeikis as Biden, this was a funny compilation. Tina Fey portrayed the airheadedness of Palin, to a tee, and Sudeikis captured Biden's "I'm trying not to be arrogant" arrogantness quite well. I really loved how Tina Fey made her version of Palin ignore questions, and talk about other stuff, like Palin really did in the VP debate. I also loved how Biden kept referring to Scranton as the absolute worst place on earth, and how he loved McCain, even though he was full of rage, and eluded that he was mentally unstable. I probably enjoyed the potrayal of the VP debate, as much as I loved the actual VP debate.

3. Obama and Hillary Democratic Primary Ad: Ran like a commercial, "Clinton" and "Obama," on a split screen, make their case for the Democratic nomination. Each of them use their differening political campaigns and "likely backers" for themselves, and against each other, in order to make sure you know who should be the nominee for the Presidency. I think the ad was more Obama-sided than anything.

I'd like to make the list complete with two more of my favorite SNL skits, but these were the only three that I found truly hilarious-- especially the first two. If you haven't already seen them, they're still up, to get a good laugh out of. I just can't wait to see if SNL does an inauguration skit.
