Vinita is a small town with friendly people. It gives you an atmosphere of old country living with Route 66 right through the middle of town. Vinita was a railroad town, like so many other communities along side of Route 66. Today visitors will find an old downtown atmosphere with historical structures. Vinita is one of the oldest towns in Oklahoma. The town was established in 1871 and originally named Downingville. Later it was changed to Vinita in honor of Vinnie Ream who created the sculpture of the life-size statue of Lincoln. This statute is at the United States Capitol.

The town is at the northern-eastern corner near recreational opportunities. It is nestled in the heart of most beautify scenery in the state. It is nearby Grand Lake, which has fishing, boating, sailing, swimming, water skiing, camping, picnic areas, and resorts.
