Best Seller Book Review: Dewey, the Library Cat is Expected to Become Meryl Streep Movie

Best Seller Book Review: Dewey, the Library Cat that Touched the World by Vicki Myron

Dewey was #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller list so it caught my interest. I am a sucker for animal stories too so I had to read it. It didn't help to see Dewey's photo on the front of the best seller book. He has sweet eyes. Yes, I was drawn in and fell in love with Dewey. I imagine the rest of the world will too. It is expected to become a Meryl Streep movie.

This a darling story about a pet and its love. But it's also about library at the center of community. Struggle is also a theme of this best seller book. Dewey's struggle at the start of his life and the author's personal struggle didn't happen simultaneously. So they were there for each each other.

It's an honor to know Dewey. He truly seemed to understand he had a job at the library. I am glad Spenser, Iowa had him for 18 years. And I appreciate the author. She is candid about her life.

She wrote a splendid best seller book about Dewey and his unique nature came through. It is heart-warming to watch his position at the library grow and his effect on the people. I know I would have looked forward to seeing him if he were a resident at my library.

While he made his rounds, he usually picked who he chose to visit. And quite often, his choice was someone that needed him that day. There were times he didn't visit anyone at all so he stayed in his special places. One of these was a box right up front at check-out.

He commandeered it for sleeping. He couldn't be bothered if the slip of paper underneath him was needed at the time. This was true even if a hand reached underneath to grab the form. Dewey was a cat at home.

This best seller book is a good read even if you aren't a cat lover. It is heart-warming and candid. And as long as the story is about Dewey or the personal struggles of the author, it kept my interest. However, the first part lingered too long on Iowa's history. For this reason, I give Dewey 8 points out of 10 for this best seller book review. I think a Meryl Streep movie about Dewey is a great match.

Thanks for a fine review. I have nothing against cats (we have two!) and the premise of Dewey is bound to warm the cockles of just about anybody's heart. But I had a hard time getting through even 50 pages of this because of the writing. Cute story? Yes! But if you're looking for really good writing, this book is far from literary. It will be interesting to see what they do with the movie and I'll bet it will be worth seeing. Thanks again.
