Best Sesame Street Videos for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Kelly Herdrich
I have longed for my children to reach an age where I can share with them some of my favorite movies, videos, and characters from when I was a little girl. Sesame Street was my favorite television show as a child. Though the show is still a great choice for parents seeking educational television options for their toddlers and preschoolers, I wanted more Big Bird and Grover than Elmo and Zoe. So, I did some research and have purchased what I believe are some of the best Sesame Street videos for toddlers and preschoolers.

Sesame Street 1 2 3 Count with Me
This exceptional counting video focuses on the numbers 1-20. It includes songs for each number, some of which I remember from when I was a child. The video has a cute story, following Ernie as he teaches the staff of the Furry Arms Hotel how to count. My children and I especially like listening to the crows sing about the number 3 with Maria and Mr. Hanford, Elmo's number 5 rap, and the Count's vacation with the number 5! In addition, the song that Ernie teaches to practice counting 1-20 is cute and catchy, and is one that we sing now even when we aren't watching the video.

Sesame Street The Alphabet Jungle Game
Though this video is hosted by Elmo and Zoe, the short skits and songs that accompany each letter of the alphabet are some of the original and traditional letter of the day pieces that have been a part of Sesame Street since the beginning. Each letter has a song or a skit that goes along with it's introduction. Something else that I particularly like about this video is that Elmo and Zoe comment on the fact that LMNO are four different letters instead of just one letter, like many children sing it. In addition, the alphabet jungle song in the video is a wonderful change of pace from the traditional version of the ABC's.

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street
I remember watching this movie as a child with my sisters, and I couldn't wait to share it with my own daughters last year for Christmas. This video follows the story of Big Bird, who's been told by Oscar the Grouch that if Santa Claus doesn't fit down the chimney, he won't be able to bring presents. The movie has wonderful songs and focuses on the spirit of love, friendship and giving over gifts. I love the message that this movie shares, and think that if you choose to celebrate Christmas with Santa Claus, this movie can make a wonderful addition to your collection.

These three Sesame Street videos have become favorites of my toddler and preschool-age daughters. They have allowed me to share a part of my own childhood with my little girls. I highly recommend each of these videos to parents looking to do the same.
