Best Sherwin-Williams Paint Colors for a Little Boy's Bedroom

Spiderman Themed Bedroom for a Boy

RooneyGirl
The energy and excitement of little boys is impossible to harness, and very difficult to express. Very often, I would walk into my son's room with it's bare white walls and feel a bit disappointed because the room didn't match him at all. My son is vibrant, funny, and very silly - and his room was flat, boring and bland. One weekend, he woke up and, out of the blue, asked if we could paint his bedroom. I had never painted anything - certainly not a whole room- so I was a bit overwhelmed by his request; a tiny thought, however, kept flashing in the back of my mind: Paint is CHEAP. I could redo his entire room for less than $50.00, and we could have fun doing it. Best of all, he would love his room and it would really reflect the special, crazy character that he is. Since then, we've been through a few "bedroom makeovers." As he grows up, his tastes change and, naturally, he wants his room to change. With paint, making a major change is simple (and still cheap!).

I've found the best selection of paint, help, and advice at Sherwin-Williams. They have great online tools that allow you to virtually "paint" your room so that you can view different color combinations. They also have comprehensive sections with help and detailed instructions for every paint trick in the book. Have no idea what you are doing? They have Painting 101, a virtual class that will have you painting like a pro in no time. Love faux finishing? They have an entire section on it with more cool options than you ever thought existed. Have you ever looked at paint chips and fallen in love, only to discover that it looks dreadful in your house? In the store, they offer "Color To Go" samples - small paint sample cans that allow you to cover 75 square feet of wall, so that you will really know how your paint will look! Your options are limitless at Sherwin-Williams.

My son's room has gone through several transformations. Our favorite, however, is the Spiderman room.

The Spiderman Room
Ben went through a phase (post-Halloween) where he wore his Spiderman costume every day. And every night. And everywhere. In an attempt to (hopefully) get him to try some other articles of clothing, we decided to give him THE SPIDERMAN ROOM. This wasn't just any room. This was a room steeped in all colors Spiderman, and - I am delighted to say - it worked. He was in regular clothes in no time, although he did try to cling to the side of his walls on a regular basis. This is what we used to achieve this look:

Two of the main walls were done in Real Red (#6868), a vibrant, pure red. It's available it flat, satin and semi-gloss (we used satin) and is very durable. Because it is so bright, it works best with a coat of primer (I recommend Sherwin-Williams PrepRite Classic Primer) and two full coats. This is a very bright color, so it's not for the faint-at-heart, but it really looks amazing on the wall.

The remaining two main walls were done in that cool Spiderman blue - we used Blue Chip (#6959). This is also available in flat, satin and semi-gloss (again, we used satin) and is durable and scrubbable. I recommend using the same Preprite Classic Primer with this paint and using at least two full coats. It is a cool, deep and dreamy blue and looks great on the wall!

We did the trim and the ceiling in the bright, bold yellow that is featured in Spiderman's logo, and the room really became transformed. It looked like a vintage comic book! We used Daisy (despite the name, it worked really well in the room), which is #6910. We used the same primer and applied to coats, and the room could have been done at that point. The yellow was vibrant and alive, and Ben loved his room. We weren't done, however!

Using an old-fashioned overhead projector to project a copy of the Superman logo on the ceiling, I traced it and filled it in with the Real Red and the Daisy paint. We went even further and projected Spiderman onto one of the blue walls. I used the Real Red for the torso of his costume and boots, and the Blue chip for his legs. For the "web" details and outlining on his costume, I used Tricorn Black (#6258) which is very black, but not overpowering. For the white of his eye mask, I used Ice Cube (#6252), and we painted a web around him in a gorgeous silver color - Mystical Shade(#6276), which stood out beautifully against the blue of the wall. His room was perfect, and he never wanted to leave it. His friends (and mine) were amazed, and everyone wanted to know how I had done it!

Everyone at Sherwin-Williams was just excited about the Spiderman room as I was, and went to great lengths to help me find the perfect colors, the perfect finishes, the perfect tools and advice about techniques and tricks that really saved me time, money, sweat and tears! The Spiderman room lasted for 3 years, and was a great way for Ben's room to express a little bit about the occupant: bright, fun, and a little bit wild.
