The East Shore of Kauai, known as the Coconut Coast, has been the most populated area of the island since Hawaiian Royalty made it their home hundreds of years ago. The East Shore has a lot of history and beauty. The following is a guide to the best sights on the East Shore of Kauai.

On the East Shore of Kauai, ancient Hawaiians chose to live along the Wailua River and much of their history can still be found here. Along the river you can find seven heiaus. Heiaus are religious monuments made from lava rock. Each heiau serves a different purpose. The first heiau located near the mouth of the Wailua River is called Hauola (City of Refuge). This site was used for persons who committed an offense deemed for execution. The offender would perform certain rituals as stated by the priest, which would exonerate his wrong-doings and prevent his execution. Another heiau, the Birthstone, is located off of Kuamo'o Road. According to ancient Hawaiian culture, all children born on Kauai had to be born at the Birthstone. The heiaus are a great sight to visit on the East Shore of Kauai, especially for those interested in Hawaiian culture.

Kauai has some of the best beaches in all of Hawaii. One of those beaches happens to be on the East Shore of Kauai. Lydgate State Park is just south of the Wailua River. The park features sandy beaches, playgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, and lifeguards. This is the perfect keiki (kids) beach. Not only is the park set up for kids, but so is the water. There are two boulder enclosed ponds that offer super safe swimming for children. The ponds are also great for snorkeling and are loaded with fish.

The East Shore of Kauai has some great museums that illustrate Kauai's history. On Rice Street in Lihue there is the Kauai Museum. They have a permanent display called The Story of Kauai, plus some beautiful Hawaiian relics. The Grove Farm Homestead Museum, off of Nawiliwili Road, was once the home of sugar magnate George N. Wilcox. For about $5 you are taken on a tour of the main house and outer buildings (covering eighty acres), while learning about the history of the Wilcox's.

A visit to the East Shore of Kauai would not be complete without a visit to Wailua Falls. These are some of the easiest falls to get to and well worth your time. The lookout is just off of Ma'alo Road. This eighty foot tiered waterfall was featured in the opening credits to the hit show Fantasy Island. The falls are absolutely breathtaking and picture perfect.

The East Shore of Kauai is a beautiful place to visit. With pristine beaches and majestic waterfalls, along with Hawaiian history, the east shore is a must see. This article highlights the best sights on the East Shore of Kauai.
