A great place to visit on the north shore of Kauai is the Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Gardens. It is found in the town of Anahola at the end of Wailapa Road. Interestingly, this botanical garden was founded by the wife of late Peanuts comic writer, Charles Shultz. This is one of the most exquisite botanical gardens I have ever seen. It is filled with lush, tropical plants, sculptures, a desert garden and streams. It even has a secluded beach. They offer various tours of their gardens ranging from one hour to five hours. This is a sure to please any amateur botanist. For information and reservations they can be contacted at 808-828-0525.
In the town of Kilauea is the Kilauea Lighthouse. This lighthouse is Hollywood perfect, perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was built in 1913 and marks the northernmost point on the Hawaiian Islands. They offer self-guided tours of the lighthouse for a nominal fee. But if the lighthouse is not your thing, make sure you check out the bluff, it is a sight worth seeing.
In the town of Princeville, you will find Queen's Bath. It is a pool carved out of a lava shelf. Local officials have had to close down the pool during winter months due to the rough seas. It is generally open all summer long, seas cooperating. It is amazing sitting in the pool as the wave's crash against the rocks behind you. Queen's Bath is what we think of when we think vacation on the Hawaiian Islands.
Ke'e Beach, found at the very end of Highway 56, is said to be the most visited beach on Kauai. The waters hear are calm and clear and perfect for snorkeling. Ke'e Beach is also where you will find the Kalalau Trail, the eleven mile trail along the Na Pali coast. Walking along the beach towards Ha'ena you can see a panoramic view of the Na Pali coast. This area used to be the home of Taylor Camp, the largest hippie colony on Kauai in the 1960s.
Kauai's north shore is a green beauty. You will understand the nickname after your visit. Take your time as you cruise Highway 56 along the north shore, there is much to see. This article only highlights the hot spots on the north shore of Kauai.
