It takes about an hour and a half to get from Kona to the Kilauea Crater. I am going to recommend some things to do along the way to make the trip more enjoyable, plus you will get to see some hidden gems on the Big Island of Hawaii. At mile marker 80 on Highway 11 you will come up to a dirt road called Road to the Sea. If you have a 4WD vehicle, take this road to the end and you will find a deserted black sand beach. This is a public access road; do not let the signs fool you.
If you are not interested in black sand beaches, I suggest making the next stop, which is one of the best sights on the Big Island. At around mile marker 69 on Highway 11 you will come to a road called South Point. This road leads to the southern-most part of the island and therefore the southern-most part of the United States. This is a great photo opportunity, especially for those folks who like these momentous landmarks. It is very windy in this area so hold onto your hats. South Point is also the area where the first Polynesians settled, so it is rich with history.
If you are feeling adventurous, and have the energy for a nice walk, or have a 4WD vehicle, take South Point to the end. You will come up to a gate and a dirt road. Follow this road to the end, about 2 miles, and you will find Green Sand Beach. That is right, a beach with green sand. Only in Hawaii! There are signs that say do not enter, but it is safe for you to walk onto the beach and check out this Big Island hidden gem.
Back on Highway 11 heading east you will come to a little town called Na'alehu. While here make sure you stop in the Na'alehu Fruit Stand for some local produce. The Ka'u oranges are out of this world. They also sell some homemade baked goodies that are truly delicious. And for the picky eater, they have pizza.
Continuing on Highway 11 at mile marker 56 you will come to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. As an FYI, this is the easiest black sand beach to get to on the Big Island, so no need to be upset if you skipped the black sand beach previously mentioned, as long as you make sure you stop at this one. The water is cold here so beware if you plan on taking a dip.
There are many wonderful stops along the southern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii. As you head out to see the famous volcano, be sure to take some time to see the beauty. This guide points out the best sights in South Island on the Big Island of Hawaii.
