Best Sitcom

I am not a fan of the situation comedy or sitcoms for short. As a result there are very few of them - three to be exact - that I would consider good or funny.

My favourite sitcom is "M*A*S*H". The off beat comedy of Alan Alda is my kind of humour. War is never a funny thing but on M*A*S*H it wasn't about the war itself; instead it was about the antics of the doctors and staff. Grandted the humour on the show was not for everyone. "M*A*S*H" was a show that aired long before the current crop of sitcoms where walking in the door prompts a laugh track. Alda's style of humour was in the zingers and one liners that he tossed out and would fly over your head if you weren't paying attention. It was intelligent humour for the thinking person. Very few programs on the television today make you want to think and the current listing of sitcoms is top among the list.

Another sitcom in that same style was "Hogen's Heroes". Again the show was set in a war era; but again it was not about the war. Hogan (Bob Crane) and his gang were always pulling the wool over the eyes of the German prsoner of war camp officials. Sargentt Schultz's constant remark of "I know nothing" is classic. Mention that phrase today and the younger generation has no clue what it means or why it is even funny.

The third and last sitcom was from when I was a wee one. It starred Bill Bixby and was called "The Courtship of Eddie's Father". It involved the dad (Bixby), his small son, and a Japanese lady as the housekeeper. Little Eddie was always trying to hook dad up with a girl. But even with all that and some of the antics, the show demonstrated that dad's could not only be single parents but good ones even in the sixtiews.

For my taste and off beat sense of humour these three sitcoms were the best ever made. Others to me are either not funny and/or not intelligent.

While they are not sitcoms but dramas the three CSI programs always a few really good one lineers or a play on words in them and that is one reason why they are good programs.

Like my taste in music, my taste in television shows and what I consider humourous is vastly different than the average person and this is why I find very few of the sitcoms that have ever aired to be good or funny.

Cheers is the most underrated sitcom and my favorite. I would put it in the top 5 of all time. The writing was very unique and sharp and the acting was very good. I still remember some of the lines that the coach said.

There was a period of a couple of years that it went downhill after Long left and Kirsty Alley was a terrible choose to add to the show but it finally rebounded back when they made her a minor character.

The characters of coach and Woody made the show and the actors did a great job. Woody Harilson was also on Will & Grace for awhile and he has great timing for comedy. Shelly Long was perfect. All the regulars were good.
