1990s Sitcoms

Although many television commentators and critics have attempted to claim that the sitcom is dead, it continues to rise from the grave, constantly reinventing itself to meet the needs of new demographics. The 1990s was a particularly rich time for the American sitcom, and this article will discuss some of the best and funniest sitcoms from the 1990s.

Frasier

If you like your sitcoms to have a bit of an intellectual bite to them, then you will like "Frasier," which followed the exploits of a Seattle intellectual radio personality (and psychologist), as well as his family, including his blue collar father, his fastidious brother, and his father's saucy British caretaker. This 1990s sitcom, which was both popular and critically acclaimed, was one of the best of the decade.

Northern Exposure

This unique 1990s sitcom followed the misadventures of a New York doctor and his attempts to brave the very different culture of the distant parts of Alaska. Although it started out with the traditional fish out of water formula, it gradually developed some of the other characters (many of whom were quite unique and zany in their own ways) so that you couldn't help but love this isolated town and its peculiar inhabitants.

Everybody Loves Raymond

If you like your comedy with a bit of bite to it, then you will definitely enjoy this sitcom, which features a dysfunctional family and their almost-constant bickering. Although the comedy is at times rather caustic, it is nevertheless an enjoyable way to spend a few hours, and it has continued to be shown on several channels, even after the end of the series.

Roseanne

Although seemingly simple comedy, this biting sitcom features one of the most formidable women in television and comedy. The sitcom manages to have moments of both hilarity (it is one of the funniest shows to have ever run on television) but also very serious moments of contemplation and critique of the social situation of that period. Both thought provoking and more than a touch dark, this is one 1990s sitcom everyone should watch.

Home Improvement

If you like your sitcoms in the lighter side, then be sure to check out this 1990s sitcom, which features the formidable comic talents of Tim Allen. The show follows the exploits of the accident-prone handyman Tim and his long-suffering wife Jill, as well as their sons and friends. Although not as substantial as some of the other comedies on this list, it's still a great way to get a laugh.

There you have it, the best sitcoms of the 1990s. If you'er feeling down, or if you just want to have a laugh, then be sure to spend at least a couple of hours watching these hilarious shows.
