Best Ski Resorts in Alaska

Zac Linzmeier
When you think of Alaska you probably think of snow so it is no wonder that you are considering Alaska as a destination for your next ski or snowboard adventure. Alaska offers some world class ski resorts which provide excellent runs as well as top notch backcountry skiing or snowboarding that is continuously revitalized and left untracked by new waves of snow. If you are heading to Alaska in search of skiing then there are two ski resorts that you need to check out.

The first is Alyeska Ski Resort, located in close proximity to Anchorage. Alyeska is hands down the largest ski resort in the state and immensely popular. It offers a ton of different runs, suitable for different skiing or riding levels, as well as a little bit of great backcountry. Skiing Magazine America has rated Alyeska as one of the top 25 ski resorts in North America, and for good reason. A combination of perfect snow fall, the fact that it is easy to reach due to its proximity to Anchorage, prices and variety of terrain contributed to this exceptional ranking by a very prestigious magazine. If large ski resorts aren't your thing and fresh backcountry power is then you should consider the second option for the best ski resorts in Alaska.

In a close second place comes Eaglecrest Ski Area, located in Juneau Alaska. Eaglecrest earns honors as one of Alaska's best ski resorts for a few different reasons. One of the largest things that Eaglecrest has going for it is natural snow accumulation; just a few years ago the summit of the ski area boasted a world record for most snow that year, out of every mountain in the world! Eaglecrest offers a series of well groomed runs which aren't too icy due to the regular snow dustings. If you are into backcountry skiing or snowboarding then this is the place for you, as this is where Eaglecrest really shines. Eaglecrest Ski Area offers a series of hiking trails, off of the highest chair lift. This allows you to hit a number of different runs, without repeating a single one all day long, which provides untracked powder fresh for the taking. In addition Eaglecrest is one of the cheapest ski destinations in the country as it is run by the city who takes a loss every year on the facility just from operating costs. If you are looking for some cheap powder then Eaglecrest is your Alaskan ski destination.
