Best Southern Desserts to Serve with Ice Cream

Ashley Paige Johnson
Fall is in the air and that means there is nothing better than a good home-cooked meal with a rich, warm dessert. What's even better than that is ice cream right on the side, melting and becoming part of the dish. Here are some of my favorite desserts that can be served with ice cream, straight from the South, of course, so you know they are scrumptious!

Pecan Pie

Ingredients

1 pie unbaked pie shell
1 cup light corn syrup
½ cup light brown sugar
½ cup dark brown sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1/3 cup melted butter
3 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dash of cinnamon
1 ½ cup pecans

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Combine light and dark brown sugar, corn syrup, salt, butter and vanilla in large mixing bowl and mix well.

3. Add pecans.

4. Poor into pie shell.

5. Bake until set.

6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Apple Crisp

Ingredients

4 small apples or 3 large apples
¾ cup white sugar
¼ cup light brown sugar
¼ cup dark brown sugar
¼ cup butter, cold and cut into pieces
½ cup pecans
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Dash of cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup flour

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Grease 8-9 inch pan.

3. Peel and slice apples. Place in a bowl with lemon juice.

4. Add to the apples the cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugars.

5. In a separate bow, combine white sugar, flour and oats.

6. Cut butter into flour mix until crumbly and stir in the nuts.

7. Spread apple mixture in to baking dish.

8. Top with the crumble mixture.

9. Bake until set.

10.Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Baked Alaska

Ingredients

2/3 cup white sugar
1 sponge cake
5 egg whites, room temperature
1 container of ice cream, any flavor (I like vanilla)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Beat egg whites, gradually adding sugar to make a stiff meringue.

3. Slice the sponge cake a little larger than the frozen block of ice cream.

4. Cover ice cream with the meringue completely.

5. Bake until light brown.

These recipes are extremely simple and easy to make. Make sure you serve them still warm so the ice cream will partly melt while you are eating! Don't wait until a holiday or special occasion to try them!
