Best Sports Team of 2007

The University of Hawaii Football Program

Theres alot of Sports teams in the Nation and with the talent on all these teams weather Pro or college to take anything away from any of those athletes. However when I start to think of one team in particular, I'm immediately drawn to a team I followed quite closely throughout the year The Hawaii Warriors of the WAC conference in the NCAA. For starters the Quarterback Colt Brennan one of the most efficient passers in NCAA history. Holding numerous NCAA records such as Most completions in a quarter 19, set in the first game of the 2007 season a game against Northern Colorado also in that same game he set the record for most completions in a half at 34 and touchdown passes in a half 6 all 3 records set in 1 game alone. With passing records set you need a great receiving crew witch Hawaii has in Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen , and Jason Rivers.Colt Brennan also has the Record for most Passing Touchdowns in a season at 63 touchdowns in one season alone. In just 2 seasons he passed for 9,850 yards a NCAA Record as well. This year Colt Brennan was a Heisman Finalist where he took 3rd in the Heisman race of 2007. With players like him and the rest of the Hawaii Team its hard to argue their performance wasn't better than any other team in the NCAA the only team in the NCAA to go unbeaten the entire year. In a year were we saw great teams be upset week after week Hawaii stayed immune to the upset bug and finished there season perfect.

We've talked about quarterback Colt Brennan but what would a great quarterback be without great receivers, again I introduce you to Ryan Grice-Mullen, Davone Bess, and Jason Rivers. all 3 of whom had over 1,000 yards receiving Ryan Grice-Mullen led the team with 1335 yards Receiving and Jason Rivers led the team in touchdown receptions with 13 Ryan Grice-Mullen and Davone Bess both had 12 touchdown recepitions.Malcolm Lane had the longest touchdown receptions of the year with a 81 yard TD reception. Colt Brennans numbers this year were more than any other quarterback nominated for the heisman with a total of 4174 yards passing and 38 touchdowns,The only blemish on these stats is 14 interceptions this year, however anytime Colt Brennan threw a INT he made up for it the very next drive by throwing a TD no other Quarterback in NCAA history had ever rebounded like that after a INT and when you start to think of all the great collegiate quarterbacks it is easy to be amazed at what he could do.When you compare all what the Hawaii offense has done the Hawaii Defense stepped up over and over again crushing offense every week and when they played poorly the Hawaii offense always complemented the defense by stepping up in its place. With all the teams accomplishments when you look for one person in particular who led and mentored these kids year after year look no further than the head coach June Jones.

Early on Colt Brennan who first had been recruited at the University of Colorado were he met some minor trouble with the law even did a stint in a youth facility were he lost his spot on the Colorado team and never had a chance to play or go to the school cause the scholarship was withdrawn before the school year. Coach June Jones saw the potential in Colt Brennan and recruited him to the University of Hawaii mentoring Colt from day 1 and the turn around Colt Brennan has made has made headlines all over the nation. When you add all the accomplishments the Hawaii Warriors have achieved as a team really is astonishing and Coach June Jones has stood by his players from day 1 teaching these kids the game of football. I myself would like to thank the Hawaii Warriors football team for a great year of very entertaining football it has truly been a privilege to watch them play week after week. However the 2007 season isn't over just yet for the Hawaii Warriors as they have received the Schools first ever BCS bowl bid for the Nokia Sugar Bowl down in New Orleans, La. where they will play a top SEC conference team The Georgia Bulldawgs. I'm sure the Hawaii team will deliver as they have all year long and for those who plan on watching the game keep an eye on Colt Brennan and the Hawaii offense and you will see one of the best offenses in the NCAA.

The Hawaii Warriors take alot of critisim for being in a smaller confrence they alot get looked over when compared to teams across the nation that are in tougher confrences but when you take a moment and compare numbers year after year The Hawaii Warriors remain consistent were other teams don't. They don't get alot of their games broadcast on nation TV. In my opinion when they face off against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl a team from the SEC witch most consider the toughest confrence in the NCAA I believe the nation is gonna see the real talent of the Hawaii Warriors on one of the biggest stages in College football.

In closing I would like to thank ESPN.com and Hawaiiathletics.com for all the stats listed in this article about The University of Hawaii and its Football Program.

    Excellent reporting.

They played one of the softest schedules in all of college football. Let's not heap the praise before we see what they're capable of against Georgia and FR running back Moreno.

Brennan is a servicable QB, but he's also a product of that offensive scheme and that was evidenced when the back up had a huge game when Brennan was out.

There are better teams in 2007 - the New England Patriots perhaps? Maybe the Florida Gators basketball team? The San Antonio Spurs? No disrespect, but this article seems written by a homer for homers...
