The Lincoln Memorial-Oh, come on. You could have thought of this one yourself. You've seen it in countless movies: lovers gazing over the reflecting pool at sunset. The park around the pool is gorgeous too if you feel intimidated by being gazed down upon by Honest Abe.
Theodore Roosevelt Island-Lots of people don't know about this place, so it's a good one if you're not much for popping the question in the public eye. The island is full of gorgeous forest and gardens, along with circuitous hiking trails. There is also a clearing in the middle, if you want to be the center of attention.
The Rooftop Terrace at the Kennedy Center-Traditionalists can plan an evening of dinner at the Rooftop Terrace. You can gaze at your love while overlooking the Potomac River and hide a ring in her dessert. Or, for the more adventurous, find a way to propose during a show at the Center.
Muvico Egyptian Theaters-It is kind of cool to rent out the theater and play a slideshow of memories of the two of you together before you propose. You can also have friends and family sneak in beforehand and sit in the back as a surprise. (I saw this on TV once and thought it was a cool idea.) If you do this, do it at Muvico. This is the most popular theater in the country. What a way to show off when you tell your friends. And it is especially good if your girlfriend has a thing for Ancient Egypt. (Okay, I cheated. This one is a little bit outside DC in Hanover, MD.)
Tidal Basin-The tidal basin, near the Jefferson Memorial is gorgeous in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Just be sure to go early in the day for your proposal, before all the tourists show up. You don't want to be drowned out by oohs and aahs or people asking for directions to the Washington Monument.
The Awakening Statue-This is just a really cool statue that looks like a giant is bursting through from underground. It would be great for a quirky proposal, and the surrounding park is a good setting for a romantic picnic. The statue can be hard to find, so be sure to drive out there beforehand.
The International Spy Museum-The staff at the museum might be able to help you plan a scavenger hunt proposal, where your propose-ee has to follow a series of clues that will lead her to a secret location in the museum where you lie in wait with the ring. After all, they are experts on these things. You can also plan the surprise yourself.
Potomac River Cruise-Head aboard a ship, such as the Odyssey, and propose while gliding across the water in a luxurious dining room with the monuments in view. For a more quirky experience, try Duck Tours.
Rock Creek Park-With all of the secluded bridges and wooded trails in this huge park, there's got to be someplace that suits your proposal fancy. There is even a romantic-looking old stone house.
National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink-If you're planning a winter proposal, this is the place to go. It is especially beautiful when there's snow on the ground. But good luck predicting that when it's 70 degrees in January. If it gets too cold you can always propose inside the museum. Best part is, admission is free.
However you propose, be sure to make it your own. Just think about what makes your relationship special and play on that. You'll have it all worked out in no time.
