1) Mean Joe Green
A tired and worn down Mean Joe Green gets offered a Coke from a kid and then throws his jersey in a 1980 ad.
The Mean Joe Green Super Bowl commercial, which can be viewed here on YouTube, was an instant classic. Was it ultra creative? Analysts probably wouldn't say that. But it was one of the more heart warming Super Bowl commercials ever and certainly set the precedent for athlete endorsements and sentimental value. It certainly didn't hurt "Coke" and I think most people probably remember that it was "Coke" and not "Pepsi" being advertised in this terrific Super Bowl commercial. Let's face it-it didn't need all the contemporary special effects or shock value to make us instantly relate. That's why it's classic.
2) E-Trade Baby Original
Not only was the E-Trade Baby a huge attention getter, it also delighted us with the great ending "wooah" after he spits up a bit shortly after proving his intelligence. To watch this timeless Super Bowl commercial classic, click here for the YouTube version.
The E-Trade baby original Super Bowl commercial has to be one of the best ever--and will probably never be eclipsed by future E-Trade baby Super Bowl commercials.
Here again is another example of creating a top notch Super Bowl commercial without amazing special effects or any gadgets to impress the viewer.
3) Budweiser Commercial Replay Ad
This Zebra rewinding an ad back and forth is still an instant classic. It provided many laughs and still does.
This Super Bowl commercial should be rated higher for the subtle comedy that makes us all chuckle. The punch line is an awesome sports theme we can all relate to as well. You can watch the Zebra replay here on YouTube.
4) Snickers Super Bowl Ad With Betty White
It may be a relative newcomer, but this Snickers ad with Betty White may go down as one of the all time top Super Bowl commercials. Betty White looks to be tacked by a bunch of pick up football players-this one still gets to me now and they could probably air this every single year from her to eternity and it would still make me laugh. It's the absolute "It's A Wonderful Life" of Super Bowl Commercials. It never grows old. You can watch this top Super Bowl commercial here on YouTube.
5) FedEx Caveman Commercial
This FedEx commercial goes beyond creative with the caveman who is having a really bad day.
This top Super Bowl commercial was hilarious to see when it first aired--and it still might make you giggle to this day despite the off the wall violence. There have been several caveman themes to Super Bowl commercials, but I thought this one was one of the more original and hilarious. You can view the FedEx Caveman commercial here.
That's my list of top or best Super Bowl commercials ever. There are people who will argue and that's okay. You know what they say about opinions. These are the Super Bowl commercials I remember the most each year when the Super Bowl comes around. These all are very memorable and I feel unique and not so off the wall that it takes you a few minutes to understand what just took place. The bottom line is Super Bowl commercials don't have to be over the top and expensive to be memorable. The main attribute for all of these commercials for me is that they connected on some human level for me. And most of them made me laugh. And I hate to admit it, but most were probably better than the actual game itself.
Please leave your own replies and your version of the Top 5 Super Bowl commercials in the comment section. I know we all have enjoyed different commercials for different reasons--so there should be no right or wrong answer to which are the best Super Bowl commercials ever. Enjoy the game Sunday!
