Best Surfing in Florida

Central Florida the Surfing Capital of the East Coast

Florida surfing was really popularized by eight time world champion Kelly Slater. Before Kelly California surfers pretty much dominated the sport in the USA. One of the best surfing spots in Florida and where Kelly surfed growing up is Sebastian Inlet. Of course it is only my opinion after venturing up and down Florida's coast the Inlet gives the most consistent surf I have seen in Florida. In fact surfers come from all over the world to surf there. Many professional surfing contests are held here every year. As well as semi-pro and amateur contests! While the surf isn't typically large in Florida the beach breaks can be particularly challenging for even the seasoned surfer on any given day. Rip currents abound, and sharks can dominate the line up on days where the surf appears to be so perfect that you have to over look that you may become lunch.

To me the Sebastian Inlet area is the best place to surf in Florida, it still has that old Florida feel to it. One of the few places left in Florida that you can go out in the ocean and not see a high rise condo. Why ? Because there are none. While Sebastian Inlet is know for being some what crowded on good surfing days. It is also one of the few areas in Florida where you can find a spot to surf where you are alone. Just you and the fish, manatee and dolphins.

Some of our Florida beaches in the area blow Hawaii away! You can walk for miles here and not see anyone. Yes in Central Florida! The sand is fine and the water is clear. The air is normally good here we don't have much industry in Central Florida. You will find alot of friendly people here, I think because we don't have the pressures of the big city life.

The ocean swells here are generated mostly by local wind conditions, but ten to twelve times a year there are Atlantic storms that generate epic surf for us.Central Florida is a great place to learn to surf also. The sandy bottoms and smaller wave conditions are favorable for kids and adults to learn to surf! Just like any where else you must use safety precautions when swimming in the ocean.

Talk to the local surfers to learn about the surf break you are going to surf at. Do not just go running into the ocean with out observing the tidal ,wind and surf conditions. It can be a good idea to start surfing at a beach where there are Lifeguards on duty. Safety first and you will have way more fun in the long run! If you have never surfed before consider getting some lessons. This will shorten the learning curve considerably. Be careful not to throw trash on our beaches. We love it here and respect the ocean. See you in the water!
