Best Sushi and Japanese Restaurants in Los Angeles: Octopus and Yamashiro

Stephanie Mojica
Los Angeles is flooded with sushi restaurants. In some parts of the city, it seems that sushi is just as popular as Starbucks. And an "A" health rating on the door doesn't necessarily guarantee it will be an A to your taste buds. A true sushi connoisseur, the author of this article has dined on sushi everywhere from Gloucester, Va. to Louisville, Ky. to New Albany, Ind. to Boston to Sacramento to Los Angeles and beyond.

Whether you're into California rolls and tempura or more exotic cuisines such as white tuna sashimi, all of the listed restaurants offer good service, fair prices, high quality, and convenient parking.

Octopus Japanese Restaurant

227 E Palm Ave

Octopus is a chain without the chain taste. There are other locations across Los Angeles and one in Orange County, but the author can personally vouch for the Glendale, Burbank, and Encino locations. Not only is parking easy and crowds fairly reasonable even during prime dining hours, the quality and prices are excellent.

The large menu offers a wide variety of salads, including seaweed salad and salads with sashimi (raw fish) in them. In addition, there are numerous rolls including fried spicy tuna, shrimp tempura with spicy albacore, the Mexican roll with spicy crab, avocado, and jalapeno. The kani (crab) sticks on rice balls is excellent, along with traditional Japanese dishes such as gyoza (fried dumplings), sesame chicken, and chicken teriyaki. Dessert, if there's room left, includes a tasty tempura ice cream. For beverages, the tropical iced tea (non-alcoholic) is highly recommended.

Yamashiro Restaurant

1999 N Sycamore Ave

Los Angeles, CA 90068

(323) 466-5125

This beautiful Hollywood spot offers both incredible city views, atmosphere, on-site parking, and delectable food. The seared ahi and seared filet mignon tataki appetizers are well worth the slightly higher price. Rolls include unique recipes and names such as Californication, which is a california roll with spicy tuna, soy-roasted shishito pepper, and topped with eel sauce. Those up for something other than traditional white-rice based sushi and Star Wars fans alike may also be interested in Darth Vader, which has tobiko caviar, spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, black rice, and spicy mayonnaise.

A wide variety of tonics, teas, alcohol, traditional sushi and Japanese food, and desserts are also available. The shrimp and vegetable tempura is fluffy and light, and those looking to improve their creativity while eating may want to try the Virtual Buddha tonic, which has peaches and special herbs to aid in creativity and balance.
