Best Sushi Restaurants in Downtown Los Angeles

Sansai is the perfect quick fix for a sushi restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. Their menu is limited, but they do offer basic favorites such as the California roll, spicy tuna roll, tempura roll, and a few exotic flavors such as the rainbow roll. In addition to sushi, they also serve dinner plates with steak, chicken and shrimp, a multitude of appetizers such as potstickers and edamame, salads and green tea soda. The spicy tuna roll is my favorite dish, along with a side of their crispy pot stickers. And it's important to know that their wasabi is very hot, so use it sparingly! The prices at Sansai range between $6.95 and $7.95 on average for a sushi roll, and the prices for sushi and sashimi vary.

Hans Grill

Hans Grill is a small sushi place in the food court of 7th & Fig. Most sushi connoisseurs probably wouldn't expect a food court to serve up very good sushi, and this place doesn't do much to dispel that myth. The first problem with Hans Grill is that they have a limited menu to begin with, and on top of that they rarely have much in stock. I've tried their spicy tuna roll and their crunch roll, and neither was very tasty, and I didn't care for the overall texture of the sushi. It's not bad for a quick fix, if there's nothing else available, but other than that I would avoid this place.

Mikado has to be my favorite sushi restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. What I look for in a sushi place is variety, first and foremost, and Mikado has that. Their menu includes at least 20 different types of sushi, as well as fried and baked sushi rolls, which are hard to come by. A few of my favorites include the crunch roll, which has flavored crunchy pieces around the edges, and the playboy roll, which has cream cheese, shrimp and is topped off with raw salmon. I'm working up an appetite just writing about it. In addition to sushi, they also prepare several appetizers, such as calamari tempura, vegetable tempura, goyza, edamame, fruit smoothies and iced coffee. The prices are fair; ranging from $6.95 to $10.95 per roll, depending on how exotic your taste is. If you can't decide on just one type of sushi, they offer combo plates, boxes and catering plates. Free delivery is available, which I always take advantage of, but make sure to order early because the restaurant closes at 5pm on weekdays.
