Best Ten Campfire Songs Including Rounds, Leader Chorus, and Songs for Teens

Sheri Fresonke Harper
My first experience singing campfire songs was as a brownie in a camp beside the Cedar River where the cliffs rose high above and provided a good echo if you sang loud enough. Our song leader sat in front and led the round, here are my favorites that I learned over the years. Many of them are sung in rounds or with a lead that is repeated by the audience or when older at night while the sparks drifted off into the sky.

Favorite Leader / Chorus Songs

Flea

This one is often sung while slapping the knees and clapping.

The Princess Pat

I was surprised to find this song listed as only for boy scouts.

Up in A Tree A Dinky Bird

I couldn't find the lyrics for this song, so I figured I'd just put them here:

Leader : Up in a tree a dinky bird, bim sol bim bam bo so lu so dim,

Chorus: Up in a tree a dink bird, SAT

Leader: Below him crawled a furry black, bim sol bim bam bo so lu so dim,

Chorus : Below him crawled a furry black, CAT.

Leader: He said for dinner I shall have, bim sol bim bam bo so lu so dim,

Chorus: He said for dinner I shall have YOU.

Leader: Then all a once a dinky bird, bim sol bim bam bo so lu so dim,

Chorus: Then all at once a dinky bird, FLEW-OOH!

Popular Campfire Songs Sung as a Round

These Three Songs Are Popular Rounds with One Bottle of Pop being the most complicated, each verse starts a new entry into the round so groups are singing different portions.

Oh, How Lovely is the Evening

Each line is the trigger for the next lead in on the round, Ding Dong Ding Dong often keeping the beat for the entire round.

One Bottle of Pop

Start a new round entry after seven, seven bottles of pop, pepper pepper pot and my dust pan's full.

Sarasponda

Popular Campfire Songs for Teens

Kum Ba Yah
This song is often sung while rolling your hands during the Kum Ba Yah parts.

Make New Friends, but Keep the Old

Blowing in the Wind

The Happy Wanderer
The Happy Wanderer is often a fun song to sing where it echoes and while hiking.

If You're Happy and You Know It

I Love the Mountains

Where Have All the Flowers Gone

Often many of these songs were favorites because of the nonsense words made them a challenge to learn to say correctly. Hope you enjoy these campfire songs and have a blast camping and hearing the words and songs echo over the campground.

I remember some of those. Actually I had forgotten till you reminded me. My camp counselors sang a pretty song about butterflies when I went to camp, I loved that song, but I can only remember a couple of lines from it, and don't know the name of it. I wish I did. I would have loved to teach it to my girl scouts.

Fun songs. I'm glad the furry, black cat lost his dinner. Good for the dinky bird!
