Best Ten Sports Comedy Movies You Will Have a Ball Watching

My Favorite Funny Sports Flicks

Ranee Wright
These ten classic sports films are funny, witty and sure to make you laugh. This list of best sports comedy flicks begins with goofy golf movies, followed by comical baseball, football, and dodge ball film classics.

Caddyshack (1980) - Stars: Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Michael O'Keefe and Mr. Gopher
(Rated R)
I was pretty young when this movie first came out and really enjoyed it when I became old enough to watch. I've seen Caddyshack more times than I can count and if you haven't seen it I highly suggest you do. Golf fans, Caddyshack is one movie you won't regret watching and laughter is par for the course. O'Keefe plays a poor young caddie at a country club, trying to earn a scholarship for college. Murray plays a loony greens keeper and is at war with Mr. Gopher who is destroying the golf course. Dangerfield plays a raunchy rich guy. My favorite line from him was, "Hey, I should have stayed home and played with myself." Chevy is a sportsman and brings even more comedy to this sports comedy classic, one of the best.

Happy Gilmore (1996) - Stars: Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Carl Weathers, and Ben Stiller
(Rated PG-13)

Sandler portrays an aggressive wannabe hockey player with lack of direction when he discovers he has the greatest golf drive in history. To try winning money to get back his grandma's house and get her out of the nursing home, he reluctantly plays golf and earns a spot on the PGA Tour. Weathers coaches Sandler and teaches him to find his "happy place" (which works for me at the dentist:) I love when Sandler is playing golf against Bob Barker and they get into a fight. Barker wins the fight and says to Sandler, "The price is wrong, bitch!"

Major League (1989) - Stars: Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes (yum), Rene Russo, James Gammon, Margaret Whitton, and Corbin Bernsen
(Rated R)

I'm a romantic so while the comedy in this film is superb, I loved the romance between Russo and Berenger. You will be cheering for this underdog baseball team, the Cleveland Indians, hired to play simply because they are 'has beens'. When they discover this, they are even more passionate about winning. Sheen plays the 'Wild Thing' pitcher with a very bad boy persona. There are great personalities in this hysterical heartwarming sports movie.

A League of Their Own (1992) - Stars: Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Jon Lovitz, Lori Petty, and Rosie O'Donnell
(Rated PG)

Another underdog sports film but with a very unique storyline. Based on the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that formed when there was a shortage of men's baseball teams during World War II. There are a plethora of wonderful characters that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. This movie makes me wonder why women are so underrated in professional sports when they're just as much fun to watch. For instance, the NCAA men's league is widely broadcast but good luck watching women's. All of the sports comedy classics on this list, minus this one, feature men.

Bull Durham (1988) - Stars: Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Tim Wuhl and Trey Wilson
(Rated R)

Sarandon plays a cougar groupie in this romantic comedy about minor league baseball. It is based on the experiences of writer/director Ron Shelton and portrays the fans and players of Durham Bulls from North Carolina. This film is full of witty humor, with love scenes as hilarious as they are sexy and possibly the best baseball movie of all time.

The Game Plan (2007) - Stars: Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Pettis, Roselyn Sanchez (Rated PG)

Disney movies are awesome timeless family films and this one is no exception. I get chills just thinking about it! Pettis brings great fun to this football flick. She shows up on Johnson's doorstep, claiming to be his daughter and that her Mom sent her to stay with him. The football star bachelor's life is turned upside down and his plan to win the champion has become more complicated.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - Stars: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor and Rip Torn (Rated PG-13)

Dodgeball is fun but can be aggressive. Vaughn is a charismatic owner of a small gym and enters a dodgeball tournament to earn cash to pay off his defaulted mortgage and save his gym from being taken over by a larger gym across the street. A battle of wits ensues as the owner of the larger gym joins the tournament to thwart Vaughn from winning the money he needs to pay his debts and keep his gym.

Where is White Men Can't Jump. Funniest sports movie ever and the actors can actually play the sport they are portraying. Shame for not having it in the top ten. No, No, but you're right...waterboy is better...
