When we're looking for old pinball machines (by old we mean 1960's to 1980's Williams, Gottlieb or Stern), we usually ask the Texas antique store dealer if she knew other people who owned one. This is a good technique since there is always a possibility that elsewhere somebody is selling an item he may not need.
Another great way to find the best Texas antiques is to check the newspaper for ads. Believe it or not, some people advertise for antique objects they wanted to put in garage sales for such bargain prices. Others who are undergoing a property foreclosure will advertise for furniture or other antique items that they intend to sell along with the rest of the property. In our case, people respond to our ad and let us know if they have a valuable machine they don't want.
Auctions are also a top source for the best Texas antiques. Those who are familiar or adept with using eBay will find an amazing array of antiques coming from the Lone Star state. Of course, with auctions, bidding is necessary to win the prized item. If you're not up for the challenge, you should check the Buy it Now items since these antiques are already being sold at a fixed price. Flea market auctions are another story, with a separate set of rules to follow. You can haggle for prices and there will be competition everywhere. Since it's a one time event, you have to bring with you a list of Texas antiques you hope to find and purchase.
For the not-so experienced like me, the only guarantee for a real steal is to study and research the type of antique you are looking for. My husband, who is an antique pinball machine collector, knows the ins and outs of old pinball machines. Antique buyers should be acquainted with the item they intend to buy. For example, an armoire is different from a wardrobe, and a Victorian style is definitely not Art Deco.
Let's not forget that since you may be bombarded by so many different items in an auction or a Texas antique store, you should develop a keen eye on spotting damages that may decrease the value of your antique in the future. Holes, cracks, and peeling paint are signs to look out for. Cabinets and chests' interior should be inspected also.
In our quest for more Texas antiques, my family has become more creative in ways of spotting their sources. Obviously, the best antiques can also be found outside the state and even in other countries. It just takes a little bit of effort but it is such a great reward (even a lucrative one) if you are able to find and keep them.
