The first thing you need to do is decide how many people to invite. If you already have a book club you can recruit an extra member or two to help with the planning. You can use regular party invites or develop them on standard card creating software. A good number of guests is five to eight people. Be sure to include any items for guests to bring on your invitations.
The biggest tradition on Thanksgiving is food. Of course, turkey is the food most celebrated on this holiday. Instead of making a whole turkey you can often save money by preparing prepackaged turkey legs and breasts. These are the most popular parts of the turkey and are fixed the same way as a whole turkey. The easiest way to provide a meal that everyone will enjoy is to assign each person to bring a dish or supplies. This will also keep the party budget friendly. Be sure everyone is notified at least three weeks in advance and take care of any essentials if nobody else volunteers.
Most book clubs provide a wine or cocktail if done in the home. Red wine is great for Thanksgiving. However, you can get creative and make mixed drinks with apple cider. Usually a unflavored alcohol will work best. Vodka and rum are both good choices. Add about two shots of alcohol to a sixteen ounce glass and your set. You can even get Thanksgiving drink stirrers and add some cinnamon for garnish.
Decoration is important at any holiday party. For Thanksgiving you'll want to get out a nice place setting and center piece for the table. Center pieces can be bought or easily made. All you need is a basket, some fall leaves, and small pumpkins or squash. You can choose to do one small center piece or use the items as a runner along the table. A runner will work best on a large rectangular or square table. You can also decorate the rest of the house in traditional Thanksgiving decorations, but the table is the most important part.
There are not many books available for adults on Thanksgiving. However, there is an abundance of books for kids and cooking. Some ideas are to get the kids together and have a reading time with them. Everybody can take turns listening and talking to kids about the books and the importance of giving. You can also share your favorite Thanksgiving recipes and have everyone bring craft supplies to put together your own recipe books. There are a few books about Thanksgiving available for adults. They are Getting To Thanksgiving by Allen Bohl, A Great and Godly Adventure by Godfrey Hogson, and Thanksgiving A Time To Remember by Barbara Rainey. All of these books can be found on www.amazon.com and will be good for book club conversation.
