Best Times to Buy a New Car

Dale Miller
Buying a car is a big purchase and timing is everything when you start shopping around. If you pick the right time of the year and even the right time of the month you can save thousands on your purchase price. Salesman are willing to negotiate more when they are trying to accomplish something like making room on the car lot or making the amount of monthly sales the owner of the company wants.

According to Karl Brauer from Edmunds.com, when next years car models arrive to the dealership around August and September, they will need the space on their lot. Dealerships will make drastic cuts and try to clear out their inventories as quick as possible. You will have better luck bargaining with the salesmen in August and September and could save a lot of money. They might throw in some upgrades or a freebie that you otherwise would have to pay for.

You should have a strategy and do your research on car values months before August. This will give you time to prepare and knowledge of what the prices of the cars are going for. The earlier you purchase in August should give you a better choice of colors and options as well. You can look up what the average price dealers and consumers are paying for a specific type of vehicle on Edmunds.com and Kelley Blue Book.com.

Instead of bargaining down the price from the window sticker amount trying to get $500 or more off, you will know what the vehicle's value is before you even start making a deal. So, its better to make your lowest offer first from doing your research and then bargain up. This could save you a thousand or even a couple thousand dollars. If it doesn't work with the first salesman just move on to the next dealership because every company has quotas to make and sooner or later you will find a salesman willing to work with you.

Other possible best case scenarios that give you the upper hand when buying a new car would be during rainy days and holidays because the foot traffic is very slow. Fifteen minutes before the dealership closes is supposed to be good because if they salesman hasn't done much business all day they will be able to negotiate without distractions when mostly everyone went home for the day.
