Best Toys for 5- and 6-Year-Old Boys

Jane Meyer
My son just turned 6 years old and he received everything he wanted for his birthday. Luckily, his friends' mothers had asked me what he wanted and I put the word out. If you don't have a son this age, but are tasked with figuring out what a 5 or 6 year old boy desires in regards to toys, whether for Christmas gifts or birthdays, you're in luck.

I have compiled a list of the top 3 toy ideas for young boys in kindergarten or first grade.

Hot Wheels or Similar Brand Racing Cars

All little boys love Hot Wheels, Matchbox or Fast Lane (the Toys R Us brand) cars and tracks. The tracks for the cars range in how much space the completed toy actually takes up. One time I bought my son a T-Rex Hotwheels set. It's a dinosaur racing track in which the cards go up the dinosaur and are spit out of his mouth. This toy was huge and stood at approximately 2 and a half feet.

If the recipients' parents have no room in their house for tracks and dinosaurs, the boys still love individual cars. Carry cases for the cars are sold everywhere and you can buy individual car sets in quantities of 1 up to 20 cars.

Legos, Mega Blocks

Another no-fail toy idea is Legos or Mega Blocks. This type of toy comes in every character imaginable. You can purchase Legos with the themes of Spiderman, Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, Star Wars, Sponge Bob Squarepants and many others. The only drawback to this gift is how many pieces there are to keep track of.

5 and 6 year old boys love building and imagining so Mega Blocks or Legos fulfill this type of play activity. It's also something that can be added to, so you can buy additional sets for future occasions.

Remote Control Cars

Playing with remote control cars in the driveway or in the house is a boyhood ritual. I have purchased remote control cars for other five year old boys and my son has received several of this particular item as gifts. The best kind of remote control car is one that has big, sturdy wheels and can be maneuvered over grass and dirt.

A little boy can never have too many remote control cars. You can have an assortment of different colors and types of cars at your house and keep a few cars at grandma's. The only drawback for the parents when giving this gift is the amount of batteries it requires. The remote piece usually takes a 9 volt battery and the car itself takes 'A' batteries.

Where to Purchase

The great part f memorizing this list is that you only have to remember three toys and you can find them anywhere. You can even find race cars and remote control cars at your local supermarket or drugstores. There's no need to ever step inside a toy store.
