Best Treats to Take on a Long Distance Trek with Your Dog

Bring Dog Treats when Hiking with Your Pet

Langley Cornwell
The joys of long distance hiking or trekking are magnified when you share the experience with your dog. Outdoor activities are beneficial to both of you; fresh air, exercise and bonding are all valuable byproducts of a long distance adventure with your pet.

While many outdoorsmen and athletes enjoy the companionship of a pet, it's important that your dog stays hydrated and nourished so he can keep up with you for the duration of the outing.

If you take your dog on extended outdoor activities, carry appropriate trail treats. Treats made specifically for dogs are safer and healthier than sharing human snacks with your canine companion. Here are three of the best treats for hard-working dogs:

Old Mother Hubbard Dog Biscuits

With over 80 years of experience, Old Mother Hubbard Baking Company has a long tradition of making a variety of nutritious snacks that dogs love. Old Mother Hubbard dog biscuits are produced by the same company that makes Wellness dog food. The healthy dog treats are made from all-natural ingredients including cheese, chicken, carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, peanut butter and oatmeal.

Innova EVO Dog Treats

To reduce your pet's overall carbohydrate intake, EVO makes nutritionally balanced dog treats from high quality meats, vegetables and fruits. There are not many grain-free dog biscuits on the market; EVO Dog Treats are one of the few. These high protein/low carbohydrate snacks are a good way to help your pet maintain a balanced nutritional profile while on a long distance jaunt.

K9 Granola Factory

Nutrient rich K9 Granola Factory dog treats are all-natural and loaded with heart healthy ingredients. The Cheese and Liver Stars, Cheddar and Liver Bagels, Peanut Butter Drops and Carob Crunch Balls are easy to carry, power-packed treats to take on the trail. Be careful though, these healthy dog treats look so good you may want a nibble.

In addition to packing the appropriate dog treats, remember these important tips when hiking with your dog:
• Don't feed your dog a large meal right before you hit the trail.
• Take along plenty of water, dogs tend to dehydrate quickly and have a high risk of heat stroke.
• Collapsible nylon bowls or plastic bowls are lightweight and easy to carry on the trail.
• Avoid sharing traditional trail mix or gorp with your pet. Raisins and chocolate are harmful to dogs.
• Pack more food than your dog normally consumes, on the trail he will burn more calories than usual.
• Bring extra dog treats and food in case you get lost and must spend the night on the trail.
