An open tread design on snow tires for trucks is important for ultimate traction. When driving the snow is packed into the tread. If the tread design is open the snow will be pushed out of the tire allowing for better traction as it bites into the snow. If the tread design is a tight or closed pattern the snow stays in the tread because it is trapped and will make the tires slick, sort of like driving around on inner tubes instead of tires.
Firestone Destination LE offers the open tread design needed for winter driving. Reasonably priced at just over $120, the Firestone destination LE is one of the cheaper winter tire choice on the market for trucks.

Kumho Road Venture SAT KL61 doesn't seem to get the credit it deserves as a winter tire. The Kumho Road Venture SAT KL61 is a reasonably priced winter tires option at around $139. This open tread design allows the packed snow to escape from the tire to provide traction through the snow.
