Best TV Sitcoms for Mom

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Mom needs to rest and relax sometimes as Motherhood can be difficult some days. A great for Mom to unwind is for her to watch her favorite TV sitcoms. There are many excellent sitcoms but I have my personal favorites.

My Name is Earl

NBC-Thursday/7 pm Central Time

Earl (Jason Lee), Joy (Jaime Pressly), Randy (Ethan Suplee), Darnell (Eddie Steeples), Catalina (Nadine Velazquez)

Earl's quest to set all the wrongs he did in his life right makes for one of the funniest sitcoms I have watched. Earl and Joy are ex-spouses but Joy is now married to Darnell who is one of Earl's best friends, Earl and Darnell stayed best friends even though Darnell and Joy became pregnant while Joy was still married to Earl. Randy is Earl's younger brother and Catalina is married to Randy although their marriage is due to a green card issue. The interrelationships are enough to be funny! None of the family members are very bright but they all seem to manage to get by in life and seem to have a lot of fun along the way.

The New Adventures of Old Christine

CBS-Wednesday/8 pm Eastern Time

Old Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Richard (Clark Gregg), Matthew (Hamish Linklater), Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon), New Christine (Emily Rutherfurd), Marly (Tricia O'Kelley), Lindsay (Alex Kapp Horner), Barb (Wanda Sykes)

Christine is a divorced Mom who lives with her son Ritchie and her brother Matthew. Christine's ex-husband Richard who is Ritchie's father is around quite a bit in Christine's life but Richard has a girlfriend also named Christine. Hence the reason the divorced Christine is called "Old Christine".

This sitcom family is so funny to me because of all the absurd dynamics between the characters. Old Christine can be self-absorbed and obsessive at times, she has bad luck with relationships and even married her best friend Barb when Barb was possibly going to be deported. Each character seems to have their personal issues and the craziness of it all makes for a hilarious sitcom.

Two and a Half Men

CBS-Monday/ 9 pm Eastern Time

Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen), Alan Harper (Jon Cryer), Jake Harper (Angus T. Jones), Evelyn Harper (Holland Taylor), Judith Harper (Marin Hinkle), Berta (Conchata Ferrell)

Charlie Harper is a well to do divorcee who used to be married to Judith but Judith has neurotic issues which makes life more complicated. Alan is Charlie's brother and Jake is Charlie's son, both Alan and Jake live with Charlie. Three males in the house make for some hilarious laughs, thrown into the comedy is Evelyn, who is Charlie and Alan's overbearing Mother. Berta, the housekeeper for Charlie, Alan and Jake also adds humor to the funny cast of characters.

Gary Unmarried

CBS-Wednesday/8:30 pm Eastern Time

Gary and his ex-wife, Allison are divorced for 3 months and although Gary bought a place of his own after the divorce, Allison is regularly in the picture due to their two teenage children. Gary and Allison seem to always be at each other but at the end of it all, they always make up and there is the feeling that the two still care very much about each other. The antics that go on with each other and the children are very funny. In November, 22 episodes were picked up by CBS.

According to Jim

ABC-Tuesday/8 pm Central Time

Cheryl is hilarious with her comments, looks and reactions that she gives her husband Jim (Jim Belushi). Jim is constantly challenging Cheryl in a playful way and she puts up with his silly antics. I really enjoy the character Cheryl as she is able to balance being a mother, wife and having extended family members in the mix yet she still keeps her humor and charm.

Mom loves a good sitcom and these shows will be sure to please, they are each unique in their style and the way in which the storyline is delivered. Each show will make the viewer laugh and these family shows are ones that Mom will enjoy.
