When it comes to Valentine's day there are a few specific emotions that surface more than others: Pure, unadulterated love (for the honeymooners and puppies), depression (for the single), and overwhelming frenzy and stress (for everyone buying a gift). Before you run off to Wal-Mart or Target in search of mass-produced chocolate in cheesified packages, and before you run to the flower shop yet again, read this article.

Let me say that I have no problem with chocolate or flowers. Really, I enjoy them very much. But keep in mind that when it comes to gift giving, it truly is the thought that counts. Get your loved one a box of chocolates and some flowers, but put at least put a spin on it. With that said, here are a few creative ideas for you to bust out this Valentine's Day. Take notes, gentlemen (and ladies, print this out and gift it to your lover!).

I love this idea because it allows you to support local business and also is a much classier gift than your typical chocolates stuffed in a red, heart shaped box. You'd be surprised to know that there are probably several, if not more, chocolatiers in your area. (Yes, chocolatier is a 100% valid profession and a delicious one, at that). Head to the chocolate shop and pick out the chocolates that your recipient would enjoy most. Try some unique flavors. I've had green tea truffles, strawberry almond, etc.

A Bottle of Wine

You can also support local business with this, or go to a wine store and find a nice bottle to open in the evening. The benefit of a winery is that you can often do tasting so you know what you're getting. Keep in mind that you don't need to spend a lot of money for wine. A lot of the time taste does not correlate with price, so look around. My favorite wine is under $20 and ultra-delicious.

Mini-excursion

Make a whole day out of Valentine's Day! Plan out an afternoon for your lovely lady - the destinations are totally up to you. Enjoy a fireside picnic (or a park picnic if where you live is warm), make her dinner, take her to the ballet, to a spa, to the opera, to a movie, to her favorite restaurant, to an art gallery. You know your Valentine best, so take her somewhere she will love.

Make the card yourself

I can promise you that if you make the Valentine's card yourself she will say, "Aw!" and wrap her arms around you. While inscriptions on store-bought cards are special, nothing means more than original words from your heart. If you can't stand the thought of making the card yourself, purchase a blank card and write our own text. She'll appreciate it very much.
