'Community' - As a fan of Joel McHale of 'The Soup' fame and a community college dropout, I'm rather looking forward to this new NBC comedy. Plus, Chevy Chase is in it! (Can he bring the funny of his SNL and Lampoons days back? I hope so!) The show focuses on the losers in life that end up spending their time in community college; it's kind of like 'The Breakfast Club' for adults, with a group of misfits forming a study group and learning from each other (hilariously). I plan on making it one of the few sitcoms I watch from the beginning (I'm glad I gave NBC's new show 'Parks and Recreation' a chance and started watching it from the start, despite it being so similar to 'The Office'). This is definitely one of the new fall TV shows I'm most looking forward to.
'Glee' - You won't have to wait long for this one. 'Glee' looks to me like 'High School Musical' on crack, but it may be pretty good to the crowd that's into that sort of thing. It's about a glee club teacher who sets out to transform his students into a Nationals-winning team. The show comes from the demented mind of 'Nip/Tuck' creator Ryan Murphy, and from the previews, it looks like this dramadey is composed of a cast of overly-enthusiastic, way-too-dramatic, and obnoxious characters. Look for this new and shiny show to debut in a very suitable place on Fox on May 19th after 'American Idol'.
'The Cleveland Show' - Can Fox pull off yet another new animated sitcom? Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcoms 'Family Guy' and 'American Dad' are two of the few shows that I never miss, and I'm hoping that upcoming 'The Cleveland Show' spin-off of 'Family Guy' will be just as good. Cleveland, however, isn't the most thrilling character on 'Family Guy' (I would have preferred a look into Quagmire's life), but with Cleveland leaving his best buds in Quahog and moving in with an old flame and her family, this show really could end up being the first successful primetime animated show featuring a black family (Fox's first foray here, 'The PJs', didn't do so well). Cleveland will be joined by his colorful neighbors (I always love the cast of characters on animated sitcoms), which include a redneck, hipster, and family of talking bears. I'm looking forward to seeing this new show when in debuts in fall of 2009.
'The Goode Family' - What can I say? I have an infantile sense of what I like to look at, and prefer animated characters to real people in my TV shows. So if you're like me, you might appreciate this new animated comedy about television's greenest family. Plus it's from the creator of 'Beavis & Butt-head' and 'King of the Hill', Mike Judge. The show is about an environmentally-conscious family that live by the motto, WWAGD (What would Al Gore Do?); think of it as a family that's almost the exact opposite of the Hills. Is the world of sitcoms ready for a green family? I don't know, but I hope so, because this is one of the TV shows I look forward to following every week. Look for this upcoming hit on ABC on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 9/8 central.
'100 Questions' - This show sounds a lot like 'How I Met Your Mother', with a woman reviewing her whole life to get to the point she's currently at. Charlotte is a young woman who's been unlucky in love and using a dating site that has a 100-question compatibility test. With every difficult question, she reflects on different times in her life (in which humorous things will surely happen) with her support system comprised of her four close friends. This comedy has the potential to be a big hit, and is directed by Jim Burrows, of 'Friends' and 'Will & Grace' sitcoms fame. Look for it on NBC in the fall along with the next upcoming show on this list.
'Parenthood' - Ron Howard's movie gets remade into a TV series again. Will it work this time? This "new" show is about four siblings raising their families with very different parenting styles. This premise sounds a lot like recent ill-fated series 'In the Motherhood', but there has to be at least one successful sitcom about parenting on television, so maybe this one will be it. I'm at least giving this new show a chance when it comes out in the fall.
If you're looking for new sitcoms to follow, get ready for the laughs with these great new funny TV shows. Hopefully these upcoming comedies will all be big hits, because we need to spend our time at home unwinding and laughing.
