If you're searching for a video conversion program then you have probably noticed the plethora of different programs out there. These vary in price and capabilities so it is important to know a few things about them to determine which video conversion software is best suited to your needs. Here are the best video conversion software programs reviewed.

Roxio Easy Video Copy and Convert 4 (Premier)

Roxio has long been a top name in the field, especially as it relates to burning or copying videos and DVDs. This latest product in their lineup is a good value retailing at $29.99 and is not strictly for video conversions. It also includes CD/DVD burning capabilities, ability to create CD images, and even an integrated entertainment center where you can buy or rent movies. For the more novice user it may be difficult to get used to the video conversion aspect, however, as it is not very user friendly since it is not the focal point of this software suite.

AVS Video Converter

AVS Video Converter is most widely appreciated as the best software out there, which is reflected in its top shelf $39.00 pricing. If you are looking to do a lot of video conversion and want all of the bells and whistles such as being able to rip straight from a DVD and convert directly to your desired output; most software requires you rip then convert taking twice as long. One of the best features is the ease of the file type selection. Rather than having to figure out what you need just tell the software you want to play the video on your iPod, or with Windows Media Player and it will determine what format to convert for you. The ability to convert HD formats is also a plus as this is rare without standalone video conversion software.

Hey!Watch

If you're just looking to convert one video, or one in a blue moon, then consider the web based Hey!Watch solution. This is great for the occasional video conversion because you don't have to download or install any programs and if you just use it a couple of times you can do it for free with the free trial option. It includes most all video formats and you simply upload your video to their website and tell them what file type you would like your output to be. The only real drawback here is that it is web based so it can be very slow, especially with large movies.

Xilisoft Video Converter 5.1

Xilisoft Video Converter 5.1 is another top name on the market. Priced at $39.95 it is a middle of the road product with a great wizard for the novice video converter. The biggest flaw here is that it has no support for converting FLV video file types, flash from sites such as YouTube, but if you are not trying to that then this is a non-issue. This program also lets you specify a desired device, such as iPod, and it will pick the file extension for you. If you have little to no technical abilities this may be a wise choice.

ImTOO Video Converter 6.0

Also priced at $39.95, and by Xilisoft's sister company, ImToo Video Converter 6.0 is another viable middle of the road option. Essentially the same back end here it is mostly a matter of personal preference as the biggest difference is in the user interface. Consider trying the demo of each and deciding which one you are more comfortable with, the actually functionality is identical. Some users have also reported that ImTOO has quicker online technical support than Xilisoft so that may be a factor in your determination.
