Best Video Games for a Video Game Party

Lee Andrew Henderson
Video games are one of the most popular forms of entertainment today so if you're ever planning some kind of birthday for your child then a video game party could be a lot of fun. A lot of parents might not have any idea what video games to have available at the video game party so here is a guide to some good choices.

Before we get to the list of games that are good for a video game party there is something to consider. The first is whether your child is a casual gamer or a hardcore gamer. Casual gamers have an interest in games but don't play all the time while hardcore gamers are constantly playing video games. Typically Nintendo Wii owners will be casual and Playstation and Xbox owners will be hardcore but this is not always the case. If you don't know for sure then don't be afraid to just ask your child which one they think they are. It is important to know whether your child is a casual gamer or a hardcore gamer because the type of game they want to play will be different.

Madden Football or NCAA Football
First person and third person shooters are all the rage these days but sports games put multiplayer games on the map. Madden and NCAA Football are the top sports games but you can easily substitute these for another sports game if your child prefers a sport other than football.

Left for Dead 2
There are a lot of shooters that are popular multiplayer games but there aren't many scenarios that builds camaraderie like surviving a zombie attack. After playing Left for Dead with a group of friends you will immediately feel like you've bonded with them.

Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter
The most recent installment of either series is a great game for parties but you might have to do a little research on Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter to find out what the most recent installment is because there are constantly new versions (currently the latest versions are Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe). Fighting games can be played at gaming parties in two different ways. A tournament can be set up so that each player that wins advances until they get to a finals. Or two players can start and the person that wins continues playing while the player that loses is swapped out for somebody else.

Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort
Wii games are much more likely to interest the casual gamer. Wii Sports is not for the sports fan that wants to play as real players, accumulate stats and have a realistic simulation. Wii Sports is more of a light game with many sports included in one game. Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort has everything from basketball and tennis to bowling and kayaking.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is like the Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter for casual gamers and younger gamers. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a fighting game but instead of blood and guts it stars cute Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, Kirby and all their friends.

Mario Kart Wii
Mario Kart is another game that stars mostly characters from Mario video games with a few guest appearances, like Donkey Kong. Mario Kart Wii is a racing game but the players can also trip up their opponents by throwing bananas and other items in their paths.

Video Games for Any Gamer at a Video Game Party
Rock Band/Guitar Hero
Rock Band and Guitar Hero are two of the few games that seem to be adored by both hardcore gamers and casual gamers. Guitar Hero is fine if it is the best you can do but Rock Band is much better for a party because there are multiple instruments so that many people can play at one time.

Latest Release
Another option for a video game party is just to keep up with the video games that your child is looking forward too. If there is a game that your child and their friends have been waiting for and you buy it for the video game party then the party will be a major hit.
