I still struggle with many of the cords on the guitar. So the first aspect of guitar playing is buying the correct guitar. One that fits you. Buy a guitar that is easy for you to press down all six strings between your thumb and pointing finger. This will make it easier for you to play bar cords. I started on a steel string guitar, I recommend buying one with nylon strings. Your fingers will be much happier. The steel string guitars can cut your fingers. The guitars with nylon strings seem to be much softer and more forgiving.
Certainly many electric guitars have steel strings and the action is very easy. But I learned on a acoustic guitar with steel strings. It was pretty frustrating for me. So really your choice of instruments can many times make it much easier for you to learn. You will also have more fun if you own an instrument that you feel comfortable with. You will pick it up and play it more.
One of the greatest tips I learned from a fellow musician was that Baritone Ukuleles are tuned the same as a guitar but only have 4 strings. They are tuned the same as the 4 bottom strings of a guitar. They normally have nylon strings and the instrument is smaller than guitar. They sound great and you can play almost anything that you can play on a guitar. I actually enjoy playing my Ukulele more than I do my guitar. Its so much easier. No matter how much I have tried to play bar cords on a guitar it was always uncomfortable and difficult. Then I discovered that Baritone Ukuleles have been used to teach children and are a great starter instrument to learn. Once you get comfortable you can switch to a guitar.
I switched to a Baritone Ukulele last year and I am having more fun with it than I ever did my guitars. It has a wonderful sound and is very unique. Best of all its easy to play. So if you are thinking of learning to play guitar, maybe you might want to check out a Baritone Ukulele.
