Best Ways to Enhance Your Child's Homeschool Education

Maggie Blake
For those new to homeschooling, or those who have not yet begun to homeschool their children but plan to in the future, you may be wondering how to make your homeschool the best it can be. Aside from the obvious elements like providing a safe and nurturing learning environment, there are many other ways to enhance your child's homeschool education and ensure that they learn in the most enjoyable and effective ways possible. Fortunately for homeschoolers, these things are also usually the most fun!

Curriculums, texts, and workbooks are fine. But most homeschoolers realize quickly that they can appreciate almost anything as a learning experience for their children. Learning how to utilize all of the resources available in your community and beyond in order to enhance your child's homeschool education is easy!

First, head to the public library - Hands down, one of the best homeschooling resources in existence, is the public library. Visiting the public library often is one of the very best ways that you can enhance your child's homeschool education. Not only will your child find a seemingly endless supply of books, but the public library has additional programs like story time, puppet shows, and even arts and crafts. So in your quest to enhance your child's homeschool education, be sure to head to the library often!

Get every annual pass to local educational institutions that you can afford - An excellent way to enhance your child's homeschool education is to gain as much access as you can to educational institutions in your area. Museums, Zoo's, and Science centers often have annual passes available for purchase. These annual passes are usually quite reasonably priced, at about $50 for an entire family for an entire year. Reading about snow leopards in a book just doesn't compare to getting to visit one several days a week, and getting to watch its eating, sleeping, and playing habits up close. You may find that your homeschooler loves to stroll through art galleries or visit the exhibits of the natural history museum every chance they get!

Take advantage of local historical sites - You may live in an area that was very significant in the California Gold Rush, or you might live on the Oregon Trail. Maybe you live close to where Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up, or just a short drive from Gettysburg. Wherever you live, find out about any local historical places that would enhance your child's homeschool education. Learn about them, teach your homeschooler about them, and then visit them!

I am thinking about homeschooling when I have children. Thanks for writing the article. I think I'll see how good schools are in my area, and then decide.
