Best Ways to Reduce Stress

Stress is one of the leading causes of health problems. Chaotic schedules, balancing family and careers, and dealing with every day issues creates large amounts of stress. Everyone may tell you to simply "let it go", but that is far easier said than done. However, stress can greatly affect not only your health, but your entire life.

There is no way to get rid of all the stress in your life. A little stress is good, but the average person deals with far more stress than is good for them. Finding little ways to relieve stress can make all the difference in someone's life.

-Sing and Dance

It doesn't matter if you're tone deaf or have two left feet; you can still reap the benefits of singing and dancing. These two activities require you to relax and simply enjoy yourself. Lose yourself in the music for a while. Sing your favorite songs in the shower or while driving to your next destination. Take a few minutes to dance while you're alone in your room. You'll feel more relaxed and happier from letting loose a little.

-Exercise

Exercise isn't just for weight loss. Studies and my own experience have shown that exercise relieves tension, which reduces stress. This does not mean you have to do an hour of cardio every day. Many people love more calming exercises such as yoga, especially with the deep breathing techniques involved. Find what exercises make you feel the best and stick with them. Do not just exercise when you feel stressed. Keeping a routine will help prevent stress before it gets to you.

-Vent

Talking can help more than anything. Letting your feelings out reduces the stress and lets you share the problem with someone else. Sometimes simply telling someone else makes the problem seem much smaller. Often times, someone else can help you see solutions you had never considered. Anytime something starts to bother you, talk to someone before the problem gets out of hand and begins to stress you out. Friends, family, and even co-workers or colleagues can be great stress relievers.

-Take Time For Yourself

Stress often occurs when a schedule allows for no alone time. Spending a few minutes alone to do something you love is a great stress reliever. Take a lunch break by yourself or with someone you haven't had time to see lately. Spend some time on a hobby you've been neglecting, or even take a vacation if you have the time. Whether it's an hour or a weekend, take some time for yourself. Relax and do something just for you. A bath, a night out, a day off, or a quiet day of reading are all great ways to take time for yourself.

-Determine the Cause

Sometimes there is one certain thing or person that causes your stress. Think carefully about what has actually caused you to stress. It could be your job, a person, your route to work, money, or even where you live. Take measures to change your situation to avoid the stressor. A good friend doesn't cause you great amounts of stress. Avoid them if possible. Look for a new job. Discover what it will take to make more money whether it's a new job, higher education, or something else entirely. Taking the stressor out of your life will automatically reduce stress.

-Do Only What You Can

Do not try to be superman. You can only do so much. If you know that you cannot handle all the responsibilities thrown at you, ask for help. Do not allow people to put more on you. Tell them that you simply do not have the time to help right now. Taking on more than you can possibly handle causes far more stress than it's worth. If people get mad, let them. You're happiness is just as important as anyone else's.

Stress is a part of life, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Taking steps to reduce and even prevent stress will make you happier and help you enjoy life to the fullest.
