Best Ways to Spend a Saturday with Your Kids in Bakersfield, California

Shannon Wilson
With three kids, I know that I need to find ways to help occupy them on the weekends. Now I don't plan on all of their activities because they also need to be self sufficient but on some lazy Saturday afternoons, I plan out some activities that we can do in our hometown of Bakersfield , California . If you want to do something with your kids like I do, this article will suggest a few things to do with your children in Bakersfield .

#1: Hart Park

Hart Park is my favorite park in Bakersfield . Depending on where you are located, it can be quite a drive as it is located on the outskirts of Bakersfield so your kids will get that feeling like they are going on a short trip out of town. The park is huge with several areas for picnicking. Bring the families bikes and go for a bike ride around the park or talk a nice long walk by the Kern River . There is also a couple of ponds that have ducks and geese, take a few bread crumbs to give them a treat. The park is located past the East Bakersfield side of town. #2: CALM

CALM (otherwise known as California Living Museum ) is the closest thing that Bakersfield has to a zoo. They have several different wild life animals such bears, foxes, deer and more. I enjoy taking my kids here because in addition to seeing all of the animals, we can picnic at the picnic tables and they can play on the playground. It's a nice chance for us to spend time together as well as giving them a taste of nature. CALM is open everyday from 9 AM until 5 PM. Admission prices are $9 dollars for adults, $7 dollars for seniors, $5 dollars for kids three to twelve and kids under three are free. They are located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Hwy Bakersfield , CA 93306 and their phone number is (661) 872-2256.

#3: Kern County Museum

The Kern County Museum is another great place to take your kids to on a Saturday in Bakersfield . It will give them a sense of history about their hometown. The Kern County Museum has a collection of houses, businesses and even a jail from the "olden" days. Your kids will be impressed to see how far we have come. If your child tires of the museum grounds, the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center is on the same grounds. Lori Brock also has some educational aspects for your children to enjoy but they also have a pretend play area where your kids can pretend to ride in an ambulance or in a fire truck and even pretend to do a news broad cast. Museum prices are $10 dollars for adults, $9 dollars for seniors, $8 dollars for children six to twelve, $7 dollars for kids three to five and children under three are free to enter with a paying adult. You can buy tickets up until 3 PM every day. The museum is located at 3801 Chester Avenue Bakersfield , CA 93301and their contact number is (661) 852-5000.

#4: Movie Theaters

One of my favorite pastimes with my kids on a Saturday afternoon is a trip to the movies. If anything good is playing, Bakersfield has several theaters to pick from, including two that are discount theaters. For a list of movie theaters and times, visit this link.

#5: Murray Family Farms

Grab the kids away from the TV and their games and take them out for a day of fresh fruit picking. Murray Family Farms is located at California 58 & General Beale Rd. You will have to make a drive to get to the location but it is well worth it. Murray Family Farms provides you with the opportunity to pick fresh fruit, have a picnic and even visit a petting zoo. On Saturdays, they even offer hayrides. There are various fees. For the petting zoo along with access to two mazes, it costs $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for children. The hayride with the petting zoo and mazes is $7 dollars for adults and $5 for children. They are open from 9 AM to 6 PM .
