Robo calls are calls that have been recorded once so that the same recording can be played repeatedly when calls are made to several thousands of people. A computer dials these numbers automatically after it scans through a list containing all the phone numbers and then a Robot solicits you. Robo calls are used mainly for telemarketing purposes since a large customer base is targeted within a short time.

Robo calls: How to avoid them

To avoid receiving Robo calls related to life insurance policies or similar products, just ask the telemarketing company to delete your number from the active calling list. If you have an option while the Robo call is playing to opt out, press that number to opt out. If they call again, be sure to either contact them directly or report them. Other ways to avoid the disturbance caused by repeated Robo calls is to trace the call so that you are aware of the caller's number. After that, all you need to do is to mention the number of the caller to your phone service company so that they will know that the phone number is used for making repeated Robo calls. In addition, you can report Robo calls to the Better Business Bureau and in some instances the Federal Trade Commission. Some customers do take the time and effort to complain to the respective company that is trying to market its products. If you are complaining, you can rest assure someone else is, so report the unwanted calls and make sure they take you off their list.

Robo calls: Exceptions

Youngsters welcome Robo calls that seem to be originating from celebrities since they find the voice of their favorite star over the phone a pleasant surprise. Robo calls can be used for spreading useful messages to families since some type of information are beneficial to all families. An example is some general tips related to coping with weather change. Robo calls are also used during election times and to bring awareness in a community if they are endangered not only by weather but by criminals.

Robo calls: How authorities react to them
During May 2009,Federal Trade Commission targeted telemarketing group who sent out repeated Robo calls and came to find out that telemarketer was indeed swindling individuals. The Robo calls were related to a car warranty extension. Robo calls were even made to cell phones and other phone lines that were registered with the 'Do not call' registry. Since Federal law prohibits such calls, the Commission had to take action. The Commission had to sue the promoter and the Robo call company. The fraud was so large in scale that millions of people per week received the calls. The Commission took action after several thousand complaints piled up. Normally, a very less percentage of the people file the complaint since most people tend to ignore such calls in their busy day-to-day lives. Complaints mounting to large numbers show how large of a scale and how annoying these specific calls had been. The call spoke about extending the warranty of vehicles thus creating a wave of urgency among the public. When people who own new cars or those who are already aware of the warranty received the call, they were sure that it was a deception.

As long as you report these nagging Robo calls then eventually they will be stopped. You have to take responsibility to answer the phone as much as you would rather not and opt out, report them, and put the company on notice for harassment if they are making repeated telemarketing calls. By each one of us taking action we can weed out the harassing calls from the beneficial Robo calls.
