Best Ways to Straighten Medium Textured Curly Hair

Ann Siper
I have medium textured curly hair. Like many people I like to occasionally straighten my curly hair and have found over the past few years some simple tricks for straightening medium textured curly hair.

Medium textured curly hair is thick, not too shiny, not too rough, and very curly. In the past when I simply tried to brush my hair straight while blow drying it simply looked like a horse tail or mane. Sort of dry, overly thick and definitely puffy.

Here are my favorite products and tips for straightening medium textured curly hair:

Skinny Serum From Paul Mitchell

This product is made just for straightening hair and it is awesome. While your hair is still wet apply a few squirts to your hair. Use your fingers to run it through your hair.

Now, blow dries your hair as usual. The results are immediate and amazing. I also like to add a few more drops to my hair once it is dry. This straight hair serum can take dry parched hair to glossy in one application. It also fights frizz.

Maxi Glide or Chi Flat Iron

A good flat iron is well worth the money if you have thick curly hair that is hard to straighten. I have two I love to use. The Maxiglide Steam Iron sends out a burst of steam to your hair as you straighten it. It works wonders on curly rough hair.

Now, if you plan on straightening your hair every day, then I have one issue with the Maxiglide hair straightened. This hair straightens does cause split ends on my hair to form must quicker than usual.

If you plan on regular or daily straightening of thick curly hair, then go for a hair iron from Chi. They are costly, but work the best after the Maxiglide. You can buy these online and at salons.

Hair Dryer

All hair dryers are not created equal. You want to choose a higher watt hair dryer if you are trying to straighten thick course hair. Look for 180 watts and more. The more watts, the more heat, which is important.

You want to be able to pull your hair out with the brush, hold it out strong and straight, and apply enough heat down on the course hair to dry it quickly.

Tip: n is sure to aim the flow of the air down the hair shafts. Do not blow towards the scalp. This will cause the hair to fluff up and not lay down as smoothly as possible.

Deep Conditioner

Finally, if you plan on straightening course curly hair, then be prepared for even dryer hair. Curly course hair is notorious for already being really dry. You will need to fight this with a weekly deep conditioner.

This is the difference between dry damaged hair and straight hair that will look great.

I even use the skinny serum when I do not straighten my hair. It has really changed the texture.
It also adds shine and helps fight the frizz.
