Age Isn't a Problem If You Make the Right Moves when Searching for a Job

Older workers often have special skills or knowledge that can make it easier for them determine the types of jobs they should look for. This doesn't mean that it has to be a fancy skill. It may be something like extensive knowledge in gardening which is also a skill that's developed by practice, which also counts when looking for a job.

In order to get on track to land a job without having to consider your age as a roadblock you will need an inventory of things that you like and dislike, a listing of available jobs, a job-search strategy, pre-interview requirements from employers, and Occupational Outlook Handbook can be very helpful but it isn't crucial and the same applies to joining a support group.

The first step will to make a list of personal types of activities that you like and dislike, once you have those listed choose the ones that know you do well and enjoy doing as well, whether it is for work or in your leisure time.

Do some research to identify which jobs are in demand at the time you begin searching for a job. Once you have a list of those jobs, match them to your previous list of things that you like and dislike to do and find employers that are potentially hiring in those fields.

You can also check the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for hundreds of job descriptions with their required skills, and also learn about the anticipated demand for workers in these areas.

Always consider alternative and flexible jobs, part-time work should also be a possibility, the same would apply to telecommuting, consulting or temporary jobs.

In order to find job openings, you must work on developing a job-search plan that involves networking with other people that work in the fields that interest you so you can learn of potential opportunities and prepare a resume accordingly. Consider maximizing your chances of getting hired by upgrading your skills. Take a class on an area that interests you.

Before any job interview, prepare yourself by learning as much as possible about the employer's business that's giving you the interview.

If for any reason you feel that an employer displays a discriminating attitude against you due to your age, issue a complaint by filing it with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Lastly, joining a career or job support group is always very productive, mostly if you feel insecure and lack confidence about getting back in the corporate world as an older person. This will build your security and will prep you.
