The Bo Staff
If you are just starting out in the martial arts, you should never start off learning how to use any weapon that has a blade on it. The weapon that all martial artist should start off with is the Bo Staff. A Bo Staff is a long wooden stick. The reason why the Bo staff is such a good beginner weapon is that a stick can be found anywhere on the ground. It can be hard to try to find a blade on the street. Another reason why this is a great weapon is because it will teach you the basic fundamentals without you hurting yourself. Most of the basic moves that you learn when using a staff can also be applied when learning how to use other advanced weapons. You will learn the basic strikes and blocks when it comes to using this weapon.
Nunchucks
Another weapon that is great for beginners are Nunchucks. Nunchucks come in many different forms. Nunchucks are two small wooden sticks put together with either a string or a chain. The reason why this is a great weapon for beginners is because the concepts are easy to grasp. All you have to do with nunchucks is just swing and catch. There are many movements associated with learning how to use this weapon. For that reason alone a beginner will never get bored.
Escrima Sticks
The last weapon that I think beginners should use are the Escrima Sticks. Escrima Sticks are just two sticks and they have no strings or anything attached to it. You have one stick for each hand. The reason why this is such a great weapon for beginners is that you can start off with just learning the basics. The Escrima Sticks movements are just like the basic strikes and the basic blocks. This basic movements can be turned into something dynamic once a student has been practicing with this weapon for a while.
Learning weapons in the martial arts can be very fun. You want to make sure that you take extreme caution with any weapon that you choose. You have to realize that these are not toys and they can really hurt you or someone else if they are treated like toys. Follow some of the advice from this article and you should have no problem picking a weapon.
