To summarize, the Black Girls Rock awards show was a special tribute to black girls and women who are doing wonderful things in society. The idea for Black Girls Rock was conceived by Beverly Bond, the founder of the Black Girls Rock foundation. This organization seeks to teach and uplift young black women in their communities.
The awards show kicked off right with an amazing performance by Jill Scott, singing "Living My Life Like It's Golden." Then the ever gorgeous Nia Long pranced across the stage in a shimmering sexy dress to establish herself as the gracious host for the evening.
The Black Girls Rock foundation and BET honored a number of highly influential black women from all walks of life, including actor Ruby Dee, Marcelite J. Harris (the first black Major General of the U.S.), and Teresa Clarke (founder and CEO of Africa.com), as well as young actresses Raven-Symone (of Cosby Show and Nickelodeon fame) and Keke Palmer (teen actress of the Nickelodeon show "True Jackson VP." Missy Elliott, Iyanla Vanzant and a number of young black girls who are already entrepreneurs and heading up groups to help society were also honored on this special night.
There were classy and inspiring performances by Monica, Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson, Fantasia, VV Brown, and newcomer Shontelle.
A special 4 person performance by Jill Scott, Kelly Price, Marshia Ambrosia and Ledisi made the crowd go wild. They sang "Four Women" by Nina Simone with such emotion and soul that it brought the crowd to its feet for a standing ovation.
