Jennifer Kirkman
Beta blockers have a lot of purposes to them. Doctors prescribe these drug types for any number of reasons. Samples of such drugs are Labetalol, Lopressor, Propanolol, and also Toprol XL. How a beta blocker functions all depends upon what it is being used for in the body. People take them often after they have had a heart attack for preventive medicine. They are also used for hypertension, irregular heart beats, chest pains, and heart failure.

Beta blockers do have their share of side effects as do most drugs. One of the things that is most important about these drug types is to not stop them suddenly without your doctor's guidance. Stopping any beta blocking drug without the proper guidance can lead into heart attacks and even death.

Beta blockers should also be used carefully, and you treating doctor should have a complete medical history of everything you are taking and all physical problems. Anyone that has a number of lung conditions such as asthma, will need to use these medications with caution. This type of drug can also cause the blood pressure to go too low, causing hypotension.

People taking beta blocking drugs are also liable to get depression, and mood swings, and even suicidal thoughts. If you have a history of depression, it is important that your doctor has this noted for that reason.

Anyone that is dealing with circulatory problems, liver disease, thyroid disorders or Myasthenia Gravis may not be able to take beta blocking drugs safely without many bad side effects.

Any woman that is planning to become pregnant or is pregnant should not be taking beta blocking drugs since these medications can seriously harm the unborn child. These drugs are also noted to pass on into breast milk.

Beta blocking medications have several other possible side effects which can occur when taking them. Some of the most serious side effects are depression, a cold feeling in the extremities, edema in the ankles, feeling as though you are short of breath, dark urine and clay colored stools, and a feeling of constant nausea. If you are bothered with any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your doctor at once. Other less serious side effects are a tiredness of the body, sleeping troubles, lack of sexual drive, and feeling nervous and anxious.

It is also important to regularly monitor the blood pressure while on this medication in order to understand the effect on your blood pressure. The dosage may need adjusting accordingly if the blood pressure becomes too low or still too high.
