One possible side effect of this treatment is depression. Partnering up with a counselor and/or going on an anti-depressant are smart things to do. For a look at MS and depression here is a great article. The benefits of taking Beta Seron far outweigh the potential risks. It is likely that MS itself causes depression and not the Beta Seron, anyway.
The medication comes in packages of each dose, which you premix before using. Included in each package is a syringe, needle, bottle of medication, adaptor, and alcohol wipes. You will be given an auto-injector into which you load the syringe to give yourself the shot.
The auto-injector comes in its own zippered pouch with a Beta Buddy, a device used to pull the cover off the syringe before loading it into the injector. The auto-injector has a dial that can be adjusted for depth of injection.
The medication should be kept somewhere that is protected from excessive heat or cold.
At first giving shots to oneself might seem scary or out of the question. But when I looked at the alternative, I was happy that there was even something available to treat my illness.
Before giving the shot, you should hold something cool to the injection site to numb the area. Then use an alcohol wipe to prep the area. Be sure to allow the alcohol to dry completely! Giving the shot while the skin is still moist with alcohol really stings.
Holding the auto-injector on the injection site, depress the button to give yourself the shot. Once the needle goes in, you need to count to ten as you allow the medication to go in. Then you can pull the needle out, applying a tissue to the injection site to absorb any blood, which there generally is not.
It is important to rotate injection sites so the skin remains stable, and they include with your kit a calendar you can use to track where you inject, when.
Beta Seron is manufactured by Berlex Labs, and they provide a lot of customer support. This was one of the reasons it was recommended to me by my doctor. I have an 800 number I can all anytime to speak to a nurse. When I began treatment with Beta Seron, a trained nurse taught me how to do the injections, as well as providing a great amount of support at a scary time.
I am thankful for the "shot of courage" given to me by Beta Seron.
