Better Gift Choices for Retirees

Pat Anthony
Buying a gift for anyone can be a challenge. However, buying gifts for those who have life experience of many years, along with a collection of dishes, furniture, yard tools and more can be especially complicated.

No one wants to buy gifts for a retired person that may go unused. Giving a little more thought to what is a better choice might help the retiree you have in mind receive a better gift this year.

Consider food choices. Everyone eats. A gift card to a local grocery store you know to be near the retiree could be the answer. Even if you are buying a grocery gift card for someone receiving benefits such as food stamps, the gift card can be used for items other than food.

Restaurant gift cards are a great choice for active retirees. Be sure to choose a restaurant you know the person will enjoy. Retirees who do not frequent restaurants can use the gift card for orders to go.

Gift cards for salons and barber shops are a choice most can use. This is another purchase that should be made at the retirees preferred location.

A gift card for an oil change may seem a bit unusual, but it is an expense retirees may not enjoy dealing with. Learn if the person has a preference for a particular shop before deciding to make this purchase.

Some retirees take great pride in the appearance of their car. Gift cards for automobile detailing may be appreciated by many retirees.

If gift cards are not what you have in mind for the retired person you know, consider something on a more personal level. Cook several entrees that can be frozen, and deliver these ready for the retirees freezer. Be sure you are aware of any special dietary needs.
