When you sleep, your body has the opportunity to rest and revitalize itself. You are awake for hours at a time during the day and you work your body to the point where it cannot handle anymore strenuous activity. You start to shut down at a certain point in time. This is your chance to reenergize yourself.
Enough sleep allows your body to rejuvenate. Your body physically heals itself best at night while you are sleeping. Think about a person, whether it is you or someone else, that you have seen the morning after they have had a bad sleep. Think about the type of qualities they present to the people around them. They simply look as though they are in "bad shape." They look tired, cranky, and unkept. You can easily tell when someone has not slept well. They just have that "I had the worst sleep" look.
Now think about the opposite scenario: Someone who has gone to bed at a decent time and has gotten seven to eight hours of sleep. What qualities do they bring to the start if a new day? The majority of these people are usually much more upbeat and aware of what is going on around them. They are alert, look fresh and clean, and present themselves in a confident and positive way. The day is theirs for the taking, and they have every intention of taking full advantage of all it has to offer. People seem happier and life just seems worth it for these people. They are much more patient and productive than those who have not gotten enough sleep the night before.
Now sure, this all makes sense, but how exactly do you go about getting a good sleep anyway? Well, if you are a person that does not suffer from insomnia and your only issue is the time you decide to go bed at night, well then, your job is easy. All you need to do is adjust the time you go to sleep. If you find this difficult at first, you may want to make the change slowly. For example, stop all activity and close your eyes a little earlier than normal each night. Take baby steps until the point where you are going to sleep at a decent time and you feel refreshed in the morning.
If you are not so fortunate and have difficulty falling asleep due to a various number of possible reasons, then there are certain modifications you can make in your life that may help you to fall asleep earlier, stay asleep through the night, and wake up rejuvenated. These include the following:
Avoid doing work and watching television in bed. The idea behind this is that when it comes time for bed, you want your mind to be trained that in bed, you sleep and that is it. You do not want to be reminded that you have more work to do or there might be something good to watch on TV. By avoiding these kinds of activities in bed, you avoid any possible distractions that may prevent you from falling asleep.
Keep a pen and a pad of paper near your bedside - If you are like me, you have a million things running through your head at night. If these thoughts include things you need to get done or things you want to remember when you wake up the next morning, write them down and you will have no reason to worry. You can sleep soundly knowing your reminder will be there in the morning for you.
Do not exercise before bed - Exercise gets your blood flowing. It wakes you up and stimulates your body. This is the complete opposite of the calm and at rest body you need to successfully fall and stay asleep.
Make your environment as dark as possible and stay away from bright light before you go to bed - Light is a stimulant. It turns your brain on and makes it work to process the light. This means your mind and body are doing work, rather than slowing down and preparing to shut down for sleep.
If possible, sleep in a quiet area - Like the light, noise is distracting. You will fall asleep easier and stay asleep if your mind has nothing to keep it stimulated and focused on. if need be, purchase an air filter, fan, or white noise generator to block distracting sounds from outside or in your house.
Sleep in a comfortable temperature - When you go to sleep, your body and mind need to be completely at peace. If you are too hot or too cold, your body will not be able to relax and your mind will focus on how uncomfortable you are. If this is the case, you are certainly not relaxed and in sleep mode. A cold room is a better sleep environment than a hot room.
Avoid caffeine at night. This is a stimulant that arouses your body. This is counterproductive at night when you are trying to relax your body.
Don't go to bed hungry. Eat a small healthy snack if you are still hungry before you go bed. If you are hungry, you will not be satisfied and at peace for sleep.
Monitor your alcohol intake at night. Alcohol does make people fall asleep initially, but it can cause you to wake up on and off throughout the night.
