So if we really want to get a steady stream of traffic to our site we can use Web 2.0 methods. Web 2.0 marketing is simply allowing your prospective customers or clients to actively participate in your site. A simple method of Web 2.0 is a blog. With a blog you publish articles and the people that read them have the ability to leave comments. While this does qualify as Web 2.0, it does not guarantee your success.
With true Web 2.0 marketing, instead of you or your company writing all of the content for your web site, you let the users of the web site generate some or all of the content. A good way to do this would be to investigate who the top writers are in your field, invite a few to start writing for your company's blog. Depending on your company's position in the market, top writers may decline. That is OK, it never hurts to ask. Compile a list of writers that write about your particular industry. Look for writers that have a following, but are not real popular yet. Approach these writer and explain that you will allow them to write for your blog and it is OK if they include a link to their website or blog.
How can this benefit your company? Very simple. If you have 20 writers start writing for your blog and each writer already has an audience of 200 each month, you now have a chance of getting 4000 new visitors to your website each month. How can this benefit the writer? The writer now has a potential to reach 3,800 new readers each month right off the bat.
All this interactivity is what Web 2.0 marketing is all about. This site, Associated Content, is a perfect example of how this all works. Associated Content is in the business of selling advertising. They stand a better chance of making money if they have a lot of content on various subjects. I am starting to do the same thing with my own blogs. Genesee Crest Ltd is a site for people interested in marketing, Web 2.0 and social networking. The Business That Gives Blog is for network marketing, The Political Coffeehouse is for politics. In the spirit of Web 2.0 marketing, I am opening those three blogs up to 100 writers for each blog.
Call it the Web 2.0 marketing experiment. I would imagine that it will take a couple of months to get some quality writers, but for those interested in building traffic to their own websites or blogs it will be a great opportunity. I recommend that if you are hesitant to open your own blog or website to this type of activity, use my blogs as an example. Follow along and watch how it works. Hopefully within a couple of months you will realize that Web 2.0 marketing really works and can really generate traffic.
