Better Than Coffee - a Review of Oregon Chai

HeatherMara
This past year I, like so many people, have been trying to develop healthier habits and lose a bit of weight. One of my morning rituals that I thought I could never give up was a couple of cups of coffee. Although there has been some debate by the health experts whether coffee is actually good or bad for you, I wanted to find a healthier substitute because I have to load my coffee down with sugar and cream.

I tired switching to regular green tea and honey, but it just didn't seem to give me the same kick or enjoyment as my beloved coffee. I friend recommended Oregon Chai which comes in several flavors and types. My favorite is their Matcha Green Tea Chai Tea Latte with Honey and Almond. This tea comes in a 32-ounce box and the liquid mix is supposed to be combined with milk and heated.

Although I really enjoy the taste of coffee, the Oregon chai has a wonderful, creamy taste that is as good as any specialty dessert drink. It has a delicious about of sweetness with wonderful undertones of flavor from the almonds, ginger, and other spices.

This Oregon chai is sweetened with organic evaporated cane juice and honey, which is arguable better for you than standard white sugar. Many of the ingredients are organic and Matcha green tea is reported to be one of the best types of tea that you can drink for your health. This chai has 81 calories and .5 grams of fat before you add the type of milk or soymilk you prefer. This drink will not save you calories if you drink your coffee black, but for those of us who have to have cream and sugar it is a healthier alternative.

Oregon chai can be ordered from their website and Amazon, but the cheapest place I found it was at my local Kroger for $4.59 a box. This makes a serving's price at $.58 before adding the cost of the milk. Again this is probably not saving you any money if you drink regular brewed coffee from home or the office, but is a significant savings if you buy from a coffee shop. The mixes can be stored on the shelf until opened.

Oregon chai comes in many flavors including the Original, Slightly Sweet Original, Caffeine-Free Original, Organic Original, Kashmir Green Tea, Java Chai, Cocoa Chai, Chai Nog, and Chai Cider. Oregon tea also makes dry mixes that come in individual packets where you just add water. This type comes in Original, Decaf Original, Vanilla, and Spiced Original flavors.

The Oregon chai website is also worth checking out since it has a variety of drink and dessert recipes you can make with their products.

So if want a healthy alternative to regular coffee or would just like to find a delicious new drink I would invite you to look for Oregon Chai at your grocery store and give it a try.
