Betty Crocker Molten Cake Takes on Pillsbury Devil's Food Cake - Which is Better?

A Quickie Cake - Warm Delights Compared to Pillsbury Moist Supreme Cake Mix in a Box

Susan Antonelli
The Holidays are here it's an excuse to overindulge in baked goods. I received Betty Crocker Warm Delights Molten Chocolate Minis in the mail. I already had A Pillsbury Moist Supreme Devil's Food Cake Mix in the pantry so it was time to have a bake off.

I'm a chocoholic, I should go to CLA meetings (Chocolate Lovers Anonymous). I am also very particular about the kind of chocolate I like to indulge in , I tend to favor Ghirardelli and don't like Godiva., not bitter enough for me. When it comes to chocolate cake I like a moist cake with that dark chocolate flavor. I thtink the Molton version is a clever idea. I saw the ads for the Warm Delights so I was more than ready to give it a try.

My grand daughter was sleeping over so this was a great opportunity to do something together and eat chocolate. Her parents were eating over before taking her home so we decided to make the dessert.

The Betty Chocolate cake mix makes two little cakes in individual dishes. Perfect for the kids (she has two sisters). They are 150 calories each and can be made in the microwave. It's a three step process. Empty the cake mix into the bowls provided. Add 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon of water and mix. It didn't seem to be enough water but with a bit of patience it got the mix ready. Step 2. Squeeze the contents of the fudge pouch onto the mix. They suggest squeezing the pouch 10 times. Why? I'm not sure. Now microwave that on high for 30 seconds until the surface looks dry. Then 10 seconds more if it's not dry looking yet. Remove to a heat proof surface and let stand 2 minutes.

Next we prepared the Pillsbury Moist Supreme Devil's Food cake. Set your oven for 350 degrees.Dust your pan with flour. You just add 1 1/4 cups of water, 1/2 cup of oil and 3 eggs to the mix. Blend, beat with a mixer for 2 minutes. Bake. There are directions on the box for the amount of time depending on your pan size. We were making cupcakes so for us it was 18-22 minutes and we used cupcake liners filled 2/3 full.

Both chocolate cakes were nice and moist. I found the Betty Crocker Warm Delights very artificial in taste. Even the fudge had a rather artificial taste. My granddaughters had no problem with the taste, they liked it especially the soft fudgy part. My son and daughter in law both preferred the Pillsbury Devil's Food mix. Both of these can be served with ice cream which really amps up the dessert wow factor. You can also make the cake mix in a cone by putting the cones in the muffin section. both of these mixes are very easy to make. You cold make the Pillsbury Cake Molton by putting chocolate fudge pieces in the center of the mix as you pour it.

The Betty Crocker minis also come in Chocolate Raspberry and Molton Caramel.

Price wise they are about the same even though the Pillsbury Mix was on sale for .99 to begin with if you count the eggs and oil you're about even with the Betty Crocker mix. For the money, of course, you get a lot more cake from the Pillsbury mix. The Betty Crocker is fun and easy to do with children as is the pillsbury mix.

Clean up with Betty Crocker of course, is non existent while Pillsbury will mean a bowl , a mixer, and a cake pan to clean.

When it comes down to the wire I have to vote for the Pillsbury for flavor

Sorry about the duplication. I had trouble getting it to go through, so tried again.

Excellent review. When I started out in the cake business about 30 years ago, I used Betty Crocker cake mixes. They were good until they started making the Supermoist Cake mix instead of what they had been using. So far as I'm concerned, they ruined it at that point. I've used Pillsbury ever since Betty Crocker made the change and I'm still using it. I like all the flavors I've tried, and that's most of them. The last time I used a Betty Crocker cake mix was when I couldn't get anything else last year. It was not good.
I'm glad others agree with me on my preference for Pillsbury.
